FBX exporter is broken

Failure occurs on some attempted exports with message “FBX file writing plug-in failed”

  • Fails (but worked previously) in Rhino 7 (7.4.21078.1001, 2021-03-19)
  • Works in Rhino 6 (6.34.21034.7001, 2/3/2021)
  • Fails in Rhino 5 64 bit (5.14.522.8390, 5/22/2017)
“Error writing file” [file path name].fbx
“Error saving file” [file path name].fbx
  • Works in Rhino 5 32 bit(5.14.522.8390, 5/22/2017)

I think there was a recent update that mentioned something about the FBX exporter when it installed.

Guess I’ll just try a faith-based-reinstall…

Faith-based reinstall worked!

(1) Used System Settings > Add or remove programs to uninstall Rhino 7
(2) Deleted %APPDATA$\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\7.0
(3) Downloaded & Installed the latest version (7.4.21078.1001, 2021-03-19)
(4) FBX exporting works again!

Hi, not sure if this is the right thread, but Im running into a similar error quite frequently, when i go check the file it gives me a weird file name and the export is broken… Is the solution truely to uninstall and reinstall? what is going to prevent this from happening in the future?

20% of the time its working, 80% of the time it gives me these files shown
failed saves

Thanks for your time

Hi Stephen -

That sounds like a different issue.

Is there any pattern in that behavior? Does the same Rhino file sometimes exports, sometimes doesn’t? Or is it more that 20% of the Rhino files work and the other 80% don’t? Are you always saving to the same location?
Please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here.

Hi Wim, Sorry for the delay.

It happens in many different projects on multiple computers, this morning i cannot export. The files with the Tilda are created in their place and cannot be read.

My pipeline is Rhino to Unreal, so im constantly using both softwares simulaneously. They are open at the same time and im writing to the same path. This makes the reimportation process streamlined. I export an fbx from rhino that is already in unreal (unreal is also open, but in my mind Unreal makes its own reference, its not linked).

Here are the results from system info:

I closed Rhino and just reopend to export. It again is giving me the wrong file. Today im unable to export at all… If there is any advice, im all ears.

I will attach the file here also
RectMirrorFrame.3dm (1.6 MB)

update:

I restarted my computer, I changes file location and the export worked 3 times in a row. Really not consistent.

Hi Stephen -

Yes. I’m afraid I can’t make it fail on my side. I can’t try the Unity workflow you described, but, to me, that does sound like a likely culprit. That, or a file location that is being synched on a server or cloud service, perhaps.

Ok this may be a thing… i also export to a synced dropbox folder… ill keep this in mind when exporting in the future

Hello, Im checking back in to see if there is some sort of way to fix this. It still occurs between a dropbox shared folder and unreal. Is this something i can hope to be fixed in any future? it is a great work flow to be able to save files directly to a shared folder and reimport directly from the orginal file into unreal.

Thanks for your time
