"Dial Box" 2024

Long ago “dial boxes” were used as input for 3D programs. Not so bad in 2024 either!

H.S.T. Development: Custom Hardware Input for Form Finding

This video demonstrates our recent development in form finding, featuring a modified dialbox that updates the traditional 3D human-machine interface.

System components:
• Custom dialbox with 3D-printed parts designed in Rhino3D.
• 16 color-coded dials providing 32 inputs.
• Dynamic mapping between dial box and touchscreen.
• Integration with Grasshopper3D for parametric modeling.

The setup is applicable to headform and helmet design, combining digital and analog control for 3D modeling tasks.

This video shows how custom hardware can be incorporated into parametric modeling workflows. All 3D-printed modifications and the frame structure were created in Rhino3D.
The system enables both quick inputs and precise adjustments, aiming to improve efficiency in parametric modeling and form finding.
