if booleans fail - a good practices is to _intersect
there should be closed curves that define proper regions.
strongly recommended to work with layers - keep stuff in place - instead of dragging it around to a random position.
hide layers, not hide objects - this will make your document more readable / accessible and easier to fix errors.
