Here is another attempt using an elastic shell model and EQlib:
The trick is to model the flat configuration and prescribe an undeformed geometry to the lamellas. Then you can use the gumball to control the lifting.

Hi Daniel,
For more complex topology i.e. quad meshes with singularities, do you think the isothermic goal could be used to find the asymptotic network as you describe? If I’m understanding this correctly, the planar vertex stars may produce planar strips, but they would only follow principal curvatures if the mesh is isothermic?
