I have the Autosave enabled and a time interval of 20 minutes, but recently I checked and found a file I had worked on over the course of 4 hours without saving stopped Autosaving. Checking the Recycle bin I can see 3 RhinoAutosave file covering the first 60 minutes and then one in the Autosave file folder, so it appears to have worked correctly for the first 80 minutes. But why now has it stopped ?
Now to avoid those replies saying that Autosave is not a backup, it is a last resort if Rhino crashes, its your responsibility, you need to save your work more often, Rhino does not want to stop you from doing you work so we postpone etc etc etc. Here are the answers:
- I agree its not a backup… BUT it is. It is a backup in the event Rhino crashes or your PC crashes or something else unexpected occurs and for all intensive purposes is your safety line to recover a resemblance of what you had accomplished at worst one autosave time interval ago.
- I do save my work regularly normally I was in the zone and focused on what I was doing at the time. I did end up saving my work but not before I went and had a look at the RhinoAutosave files out of curiosity. It was the lack of seeing the scrolling message where Rhino advises an Autosave has occurred that led me to investigate.
- Now if you are someone who is anxious and sets your Autosave to 5 minutes or less, I can see the frustration rising with interruptions particularly when dealing with files 200MB+. Or if you cannot work for more than 5 minutes without your app crashing you have some other issue you may need to resolve. Now in my case set at 20 minutes I may have been in the zone but I wasn’t there for almost 160 minutes continuously or for 8 autosave intervals.
So why am posting this, for me it is a bug in Rhino ! The application in the File Options allows me to tell it to autosave at a specific time interval. I can see no log or reasoning as to why it stopped, I have no crash dumps to send, just a screen capture of the various folders and times.
How can I be confident the function of the application works as it should when I will really need it and Rhino crashes ?
“If Rhino is set to Autosave, and my application never crashes, did the file ever exist ?” or is just that Rhino thinks that my level of work does not warrant it after a time.
