Arched surface with rounded edges tutorial? Maybe SubD?

Hi…,

is there a tutorial to make a smooth arched surface with rounded edges?

This customer question pops up from time to time.

Or is this a good example for SubDs?

I think you wanted to attach something different…

Hi @Charles,

ups, you are right.

Thank you

Michael

Hi @JayR,

this is a nice tutorial. It’s similar to the level 2 training example.

I think my customer is looking for a simpler surface, and no patch.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

For the example given, Patch seems ok.

Are you thinking of more challenging surfaces?

Jeremy

I agree, patch is fairly satisfying result but I suspect the down side is the reverse in curvature approaching the corners.
Here’s a maybe too-complicated way - with Loose loft. With straights and true arcs on the corners, (i.e. G1 only) a really nice bubble is tricky, it seems to me.

Hi Jeremy,

Pascal is right, changing curvature in the corners is not beautiful.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Pascal,

this is a very good start, but hard to get the perfect result.

I thought SubD could be the way. But I am SubD beginner.

Thank you

Michael

Hi Michael - subD might be OK but you will not get the full arc shape - it will flatten out as it approaches the edges. Also, if you can compromise the arcs on the corners, there is more you can do with surfaces as well, I would say - that is, make the corners G2 to the sides.
