3D flower created with AI but cant generate toolpath

I have created a 3D flower with AI assistance. When i want to genera toolpath is says there is no geometry to cut. We have tried everything. I can add the confirmed by troubleshooting summary if needed

What is your CAM software, does it work with meshes? You’re not giving anyone enough information to help you, Rhino a) doesn’t do “AI generated” models and b)Isn’t in and of itself a CAM program, so this is baffing.

I am new to 3D design and only started a few days ago. I use Rhino 8 cam/cad. I created the flower in Rhino with the assistance of AI (Claude)

When i wanted to make use of the 3Axis tool pathing Horizontal Roughing and select the parts of the design that needs to be cut it says no geometry selected. This is the troubleshooting summary AI provided. Not sure if this will help

You are using the demo version of RhinoCAM?

Summary

Confirmed via troubleshooting:

  • Part geometry is a valid closed polysurface (Rhino What command: 14 surfaces, closed solid, edge tolerances 0.000, no errors)
  • Part Surfaces tab correctly populated (6 surfaces: dome + 5 petals)
  • Containment Region correctly populated (1 region: 42mm radius circle centered at origin)
  • Tool assigned (6mm flat end mill)
  • Document units: Millimeters, tolerance 0.001
  • Surface normals checked via Dir command — all pointing correctly outward/upward
  • Stock: Box Stock, 150x150x16mm, positioned Xc=-75 Yc=-75 Zc=-16 (top face at Z=0, matching part’s top surface)
  • Work Zero: Set to Stock Box, Highest Z, Center → confirmed X=0 Y=0 Z=0
  • Issue persists even after building a completely fresh Machining Job from scratch (new Machine, Post, Stock, Setup, Work Zero, Operation) — rules out inherited/corrupted state from a prior project file
  • Issue persists with all optional settings (Cut Levels, Cut Parameters, Containment) removed, testing bare minimum Part Surfaces + Tool only

The DXF file you posted is just curves. Please post the Rhino file with the surfaces. Helpful would be if the RhinoCAM data is saved with the file, but I don’t remember if the demo version allows you to save the operations data.

OK, your part looks OK, the RhinoCAM machining data did not come through, I don’t see any in Audit3dmFile either, but I only have 2024 installed on this machine, will have to get my other machine booted up for 2026. However, using your instructions I was able to generate an overall roughing path (without the containment curve) on your part with a 6mm endmill, no problem.

The “petal” surfaces are only 3mm deep. The containment curve will limit the roughing toolpath to inside the circle, i.e. only those petals. You then need to have a fairly small depth increment for the cutter to do anything. Setting the depth increment at 1mm, I get this:

Depending on the material, it might actually be better to rough those out with a spherical or toroidal end mill rather than a flat end mill.

Can I ask why you’re generating CAM files with AI assistance instead of a technician? Feels like a recipe for actual disaster

Thank you for your feedback. I am not familiar with 3D cutting and as I mentioned this is my first time. I was thinking to ad a Parallel finishing using a 4ml ball nose if this will make sense. Not sure how to send the Audit3dmFile and RhinoCAM machining data to make it easier.

I agree. I am new to 3D and wanted to start somewhere. I needed a cut example of this flower urgently and thought AI could help :upside_down_face:

Fair enough - I’m just going to remind you that you only get 10 fingers in this life, I think it’s worth keeping them intact

Doing things “urgently” with dangerous machinery that you don’t know how to use isn’t “brave”

Well in the case of CNC machines with proper safety interlocks, the danger is mostly more on the machine side - easy to crash the machine into the part or itself with poor programming and end up a very expensive repair. One is more likely to hurt onesself cutting out the raw stock block on a band saw or table saw. Or handling the cutters when inserting them into the toolholders.

That being said, yes, having an ‘urgent’ need is not the best way to start learning something. Best find someone who has some experience with these things who can guide you through stuff and explain why. An AI may seem like a good facilitator (as long as it’s not hallucinating) but for now at least they are not standing with you while you do stuff and saying Stop! Don’t do that! if they see something dangerous.

There are many possible strategies here, it depends on the material and also what level of CAM you have (what toolpath strategies are available in your version).

If this is to be made out of soft material like plastic or wood, I would have a tendency to not do a roughing pass for this geometry. Instead I would use facing/profiling to cut the side and top surface of the disc to final size. I would then use some kind of finishing pass to cut only the inset part with a ball end mill. If necessary a semi finish pass first to remove most of the material and then a finish pass.

Parallel finishing is the “standard” go-to because it is available in pretty much all CAM programs, even the least expensive ones, but if you have access to advanced functions, I also like something like projection pocketing. One could also just do one “petal” and then index (array) the toolpath around. Depends on how much you want to play with it and what kind of finish you want in the end. Happy milling!

I see it differently: there are old-school technicians who limit themselves to traditional tools, and there are more capable technicians who use AI to improve their work.

AI is here to stay. The choice is whether to ignore it and fall behind, or embrace it to increase productivity and improve the quality of your work.

I think most machines with proper safety locks will also provide you some form of training or documentation - not so much for rogue stuff you can buy from China at a fraction of the price - it’s been a while since I’ve been in a proper workshop, but I’ve seen enough students trying to kill themselves to last me a lifetime - you can’t remind people to be safe enough in my opinion - case in point, Stefano’s response below you.

@Stefano_Menci My friend, we’ll see how fast you work when you have 8 fingers - no skin off my nose. If you want to put your trust in bots that literally come with warnings that “AI makes mistakes” - you’re free to do that. When a person can’t generate a roughing path, it’s obvious they’re not a “capable technician who uses AI to improve their work” - but you go ahead, you prove everyone wrong if you want, just be careful not to prove them right while you’re doing it :wink:

Some people don’t know how to use a hammer and end up with black fingers. Some people don’t know how to use AI and end up blindly following hallucinations.

AI, like a hammer, is a tool. You decide whether to add it to your toolbox and learn how to use it properly.

I create Rhino plugins, among other things. I started using AI when everyone was saying it would never be good at coding. Two years later, I’m ahead of the curve, much more productive, and better at what I do.

Using AI doesn’t mean trusting everything it says. It means knowing how to use it and verify the results.
