I can solve this by rebuilding the surface, but I still like to learn why it failed with the original surface.

Surface Split is innocent here.
Your surface is bad:
That control point structure is definitively wrong, avoid such constructions.
Even moving that control point by a bit is enough. But it being coincident with the other is a no-go.
