STL export creates a total mess

Yes, with that the corners are not clean…

“Smooth and Slower” is better (I would never use that either), but still not superb…

Well it’s sort of a long-time thing, my explanation of what happens was given to me circa 2000. It would help this issue if the default settings were largely revamped for what computers can handle in 2024.

Minimum Initial grid quads is the real trick. Set it to 32, 64, or 96. It will do and initial quad split of everything and tends to let the algorithm refine in local detailed areas.

my settings are all the same except maximum edge something or other where there is one decimal point difference i will try changing this and see if it is different.

I did some more similar models and found that for some STL worked and for others 3MF works

to me this is total bullshit. it is Rhino that should take care of the internal details. If the average consumer needed to go through the bullshit required by Rhino very few amateurs would be 3d printing. There is a free cad program that does cost a little something for the full version. You can construct simple (and even fairly complex too) YOu then export them and do not have to worry about all sorts of internal BS like whether the algorithm is gonig to run out of triangles or whatever, it just works.

Why is Rhino not like this? I already have to pay close attention to the fact that it generates bullshit geometry that needs to be identified and removed.

Have enough issues in version 7 been fixed that it is worth paying for version 8? Can i get a trial version. I really need to decide if the frustration of using Rhino is worth the results or if i should count my losses an use another program.

Because it’s bullshit–as you tediously insist on calling everything–that Brand X actually produces trouble-free meshes at perfect resolution every time on everything with no adjustments to settings needed. You clearly don’t have the experience to say that with any authority. Again, people have been successfully 3D printing in Rhino since day 1, since the mesh required to get a decent 3D print of a moderately complex object would bring your 32-bit PC to its knees and questions like “is the slicer going to be able to process this in a practical amount of time” and “what printing technology even exists that can do this” were actually serious ones.

However, given the attitude expressed in your posts and the relative difficulty you seem to have using Rhino, maybe that would be a better option for you.
