Rhino.DocumentPath & DocumentName usage in non 3dm files

Is it possible to get the DocumentPath and DocumentName information for a dxf file? I get null returned on my dxf file, but works fine on 3dm files. Do I have to save as 3dm first? Seems inefficient.
