I seem to have a phantom block file and can’t find it. I know it exists because of a layer that upon trying to delete returns the error “There is a block definition named “J2.0>Panel_I2.0 Template.3dm:J2.0” on layer “Layer 01”. Use BlockManager command to delete this block before trying to delete this layer.”
Here are things I have tried to delete said block:
Using blockManger, delete the block. Even though the block is listed, the option to delete was greyed out and inaccessible.
Select instances of the block. No instances exist.
Perform the count command in block manager to confirm no instances exists. Count is also greyed out.
Purge, to no effect.
Check all blocks to see if it was nested. None of my blocks contain this phantom block. Used purge just in case to no effect.
delete all block instances and use purge. The phantom block still exists and so does the associated layer. The file is empty but still contains these.
Turned on all layers, used show, unlock, and purge to no effect. Still no instances of the phantom block nor can I delete the block or layer.
I am at a loss of what to do to delete this block and the dumby layer. Is there some kind of debug command I can use that will help me find this block, where it is, or allow me to force delete it?
Hi Cameron - can you post the otherwise stripped file to begin with? If the contents are confidential, please send to tech@mcneel.com, with a link back here in your comments.
This is pretty much my solution to Block issues everytime. Of course the blocks have to be visible/unlocked and not on locked layers or hidden layers etc.
I would love to not use blocks, but it is the only way to reference external geometry that is repeated multiple times around the project. If you know another solution, I’m all ears.
Update: I just restarted my computer due and went to open my Rhino file. Being a glutton for punishment, I tried to delete the layer with the phantom block and lo and behold, it just deleted.
So I have no idea where this came from, what was happening, etc but I will add “restart your computer” to the list of tricks to delete a phantom block.
Interestingly I had this same issue a few months back, corgi also claimed to be missing (I hadn’t installed corgi that I was aware of) and I gave up and a restart fixed it for me as well. I never looked back
