OpenNest - user feedback

Hi,

I am developing OpenNest to achieve better packing efficiency.

Could you share datasets in Rhino (simple geometries, not Grasshopper scripts), specifically:

  • Sheets
  • Polygons you are nesting

I’m particularly interested in the cases that are the most problematic or difficult to achieve good nesting efficiency with.

I would love to receive this information to train a model to capture border cases.

Thank you!

Nice @Petras_Vestartas, I would like to see the result of this.

Hi @Petras_Vestartas
I will send you this in DM, 135 pieces of Pat Def table

There are sheet of 600 x 600 mm and 400 * 600 mm.
A professional tool gave me this MagPie Nest

I didn’t go too deep in Open Nest with this one as I have a very good packing, but I’ll have new jobs and no more access to MagPie. For this type of geometry I began to make some simplification tools (suppress some holes, offset 2 times to smooth …).

I have a side request that has nothing to deal with nesting complexity

when a Time in seconds is supplied to the OpenNest2 → Nest Options component, at the start of the nesting an external window pops-up and asks to confirm that value (or insert a different one)

I sort of understand the reason why it’s designed like that, but I would love an option to bypass that window (I don’t know… an option that could be activated in the right click menu?)

the reason I’m asking for this is: I’m experimenting with Anemone to supply seeds to OpenNest, in such a way to generate dozens of nesting solutions, and evaluating the best one afterwards

having that window popping up at each Anemone Loop doesn’t allow anything different from Time=0, which is a single Nesting iteration, otherwise at each Loop cycle you should confirm the nesting time

I know it’s stupid, but if this window-bypass is something simple to implement I’d really love to play without it!

Thanks for noting this, yes it is only user interface option. I will change this. At the moment it is only like that.

Good to know also that you dealing with multiple seeds to explore options.
