In Rhino Options -> Plugins, do you have Rhino Render check in the Enabled column?

Can you try changing the current renderer through the main menu Render > Current Renderer. Does that work or do you still give you the same error message? If you still run into problems please temporarily disable all third-party plug-ins, restart Rhino and see if you now can change the render engine back to Rhino Render.
