Hi! For now I did a basic implementation for sorting, evaluating expressions and dispatching objects based on their keys: Inkbeagle Data | Food4Rhino
Might still be buggy or lacking features, but think the base is okay for most of what I need in daily practice. Let me know what you think. :slight_smile:

Congrats on rolling out a public beta!

I have two wishes for GH2.
1- ability to embed the definitions in the Rhino file. So we can archive a project and/or send a project to someone else easily.
2- make GH definitions that run from rhino, that bakes the geometry in Rhino and still have it editable.
So the Rhino file is viewable on vanilla installations, and the objects are possible to export and give materials, sort on layers etc.

Those two points are why I don’t use GH as we are super strict on the ability for any of us to easily open old projects.

Grasshopper 2 can run in either .NET 4.8 or .NET 6. Rhino 8 for Mac is already running .NET 6 by default. Rhino 8 for Windows is still using .NET 4.8 at the moment, but that should also change in the near future. We need to get our installer updated. If you already have .NET 6 installed, you can run Rhino with it by using a /netcore command line argument to start Rhino.

We will continue to target our code to compile against .NET 4.8 even though it will be running in .NET 6. This way we can run Rhino.Inside in environments where we don’t have control over which .NET runtime is being used (for example Revit.)

At the time of writing (April 4th, 2020) this is not part of the publicly released versions yet. We first need to put out a new Rhino8 WIP because most of the heavy lifting here is done by Grasshopper 1.

Initially we thought GH2 might be localisable, but we gave up on that a few years ago as it would delay the first alpha even further.

I’m afraid that’s going to be a “no”. I’m not an expert on light simulation and it would be silly to spend 3 years of my life just to make something which is 10% as good as already existing packages.

If someone wants to make a plugin for this, or create a bridge between GH and Dialux, then I’d be happy to help out and even add functionality they may need, but I’m first and foremost a user-interface programmer.

I started with this, but it was taking too long and I abandoned the project. I suppose when I get serious again about Graph components I’ll have another look at OSM and ESRI. Or maybe it’s just my responsibility to make sure someone else can easily create and distribute a plug-in for this… I’m not sure yet.

Wow, it’s so exciting! Some first impressions:

  1. The new icons are awesome!
  2. Series is finally in the meths category! It bugged me for years.
  3. The new data structure seems very promising. Can we get a deep dive article about it?
  4. I think Params/Data should be before Params/Input, so data storage components are clustered together.
  5. The amount of included statistical functions is amazing.
  6. The Data tab name makes much more sense than Sets.
  7. I’m not sure Intervals should be in Vectors. Maths seems more obvious place for it.
  8. I cannot find remove duplicate points. Can we also get remove duplicate lines?
  9. I’m happy to see mesh from edges, although it doesn’t seem to work right yet.
  10. It looks like if I delete a referenced Rhino object, Grasshopper doesn’t recognize the change. Is it on purpose? I don’t think, I like it.
  11. I see there is no solid operations yet. Is it possible to get a better working one, compared to the current one? I know, it is a Rhino issue, but still, it would make life so much easier.
  12. Most importantly: Please make it possible to stop the solver AFTER the calculation has started.

Maths was fuller, so I put it in Vector. I do agree it’s more mathy conceptually.

Yes. Referenced geometry is stored internally now, so as long as there’s a Rhino object it will synchronise with that, but if that object is gone (or, more likely, if you open a ghz file without the appropriate 3dm file) then the last known shape is just kept.

This is a very detectable state, so a range of possible behaviours (including what GH1 did) could be implemented.

No, that stuff all comes directly from Rhino. If you have a failing case you’ll just need to post it here. If however you have a case which fails in GH but not in Rhino, then we need to figure out why there’s a discrepancy.

You can… Esc, or the spanner icon on the status bar. It is possible that some calculation process is still messing with the UI reactivity, if you find a component which does that please let us know.

I hope Gh2 will be developed as a Plattform that can grow and be sustained over a long time. There are a lot of requests to include plugin-like functionality, but I hope David and McNeel focusing on the core software and make it as futureproof, flexible and user friendly as possible. One priority in my mind is how data is handled and meta-data is a big step of forward in that regard.

Objectify and inkbeagle shown interesting ideas on that as well, similar to oops.

One thing I would like to see is the possibility to reference data without connecting wires across the canvas. Usually there are some values that are used in various different places across the canvas, and while having a visual representation (wires) is helpful in the beginning, after 20 instances of the same data this becomes hard to navigate and manage. It would be interesting to mix the “nodes + wires” concept with global variables, so e.g. naming a parameter would sync all instances with the same name. Maybe similar to telepathy.

I have been using this one in my editors for a long time…good replacement for Menlo in Windows: GitHub - andreberg/Meslo-Font: Customized version of Apple's Menlo font. Great monospaced font for development work. Should also work with the Windows Console (see Wiki for Windows infos).

This is something I added to gh2 expressions (which cannot be used yet except in the Sequence component). Unknown variables used in expressions can be evaluated externally, meaning they can be linked to a list of “global” values. This creates a live link, so when the global changes it knows which components have to be expired.

As of a few days ago Eto supports loading fonts from files, so I think I’ll start shipping a few standard fonts just in case they aren’t installed.

The attention to the animation is incredible. And while I really enjoy all the little “poping stars”, smooth transitions, etc there is a possibility that this style can be a bit too much. It reminds me a bit of the “genie effect” that apple uses for the dock or the animations in some mobile games. I don’t want to sound overly critical, since I do like them but maybe in 4 years from now this could be a outdated visual trend like the aqua bubbles of GH1.
