Good Bye John Morse, and Thank You

On Dec 31, 2023, John Morse will bid us farewell. John joined McNeel in 1991, and has been writing user interface code ever since. What you know today as the configurable toolbar and panel system in Rhino is his baby - a set of features he first wrote in the 1990s for AutoCAD as IconTOOL.

John is a friendly, easy-going guy who jumps in to help whenever he can. He takes challenges and setbacks with a smile, and gets down to work solving whatever problem arises. He’s one of the fastest people I know at prototyping a user interface for a feature in Rhino, being comfortable in C++, C#, Eto, and (at one point) AutoLISP.

I am grateful to have worked alongside John for my entire career at McNeel. John, I’ll miss your massive contributions to the Rhino project, as well as your smile and jovial laughter.

Please let John know how much you appreciate his contributions to Rhino, and help me wish him well on his next adventure.

Best wishes my good friend. I know where you live - we’ll see you around.

John’s a hell of a great person. I’m happy to have worked with you all these years. Enjoy your retirement John, but be careful with all that heavy equipment you are playing around on these days.

When I first met John, he was a customer that customized AutoCAD and worked for the federal government in downtown Seattle. Always a great guy. It was very difficult to get him angry. That probably had something to do with his wonderful wife Holly and raising their wonderful boys. I’ll miss your calming influence and outlook that everything can always be improved.
I’m old enough to remember your fast cars and your mullet!

Cheers pal,
John Brock

John,
You are not as old as I am. You can’t retire yet.
Just kidding. Best to you as you do whatever it is you do as you
move on down the road.

@JohnM Ever since you announced your retirement plans I’ve been simultaneously very excited for you and your family, and dreading a post-Morse McNeel. Nobody will miss you more than Tim. And I know I’m going to be hearing it every.single.day, for a long time. Congratulations to you and Holly and the kids :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Congrats, John! It’s been a pleasure working with you all these years. Our Rhino coding paths rarely crossed, but it was always nice the few times they did. How can I get my hands on some of Holly’s famous Christmas fudge?
