Engineering Design Tropisms Workshop (Angewandte Architecture Challenge 2017) - September 9-17, Vienna (Austria)

Engineering Design Tropisms
September 9-17, 2017
University of Applied Arts (Die Angewandte) - Institute of Architecture (IoA)
Vienna

For the first time, this year’s Angewandte Architecture Challenge at the Institute of Architecture - University of Applied Arts Vienna will be organized in collaboration with the AA Visiting School. This summer school workshop will be a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the latest ideas that are taught at the two world-renowned institutions.

The workshop will conduct a research into rule-based design systems, which examine modes of interaction between the designer (human) and the logical constraints of algorithms (machines) in design, creating virtual design ecologies which challenge the conventional notion of authorship.

The goal is to engineer specific design scenarios using digital technologies, digital design pedagogy and full-scale digital fabrication strategies. Special interest will be devoted towards developing and researching a true digital design process and pedagogy, resulting from the negotiation between the designer and algorithms, leading to unexpected geometrical and spatial outcomes.

During the workshop, multiple platforms for computational/algorithmic design will be used – with focus on scripting in Processing/JAVA and Python, introduction to 3D modeling techniques in Maya and Rhino/Grasshopper/Karamba as well as robotic construction.

The deadline for applications is August 22, 2017.
