Adding control points

Hi all. I have a very basic problem.

I’m having a problem with adding control points to a curve in that when they’re added, they don’t produce a curve but rather a sharp point.

I’m likely just missing something very obvious but haven’t had any luck with online tutorials. Any help greatly appreciated.

if you use Insert control point or Insert knot shouldn’t be a problem. that behavior is when you use Insert kink
