Zooming in Rhino 9 (Lost Focus)

Is it my imagination, or has something changed in Rhino9 when I try to zoom in or out with my trackball if anything at all is selected in the window that extends beyond the viewport? It’s driving me crazy. I will have something selected say in the Front view, switch to the perspective view and I can’t zoom until I click with the left button which removes any selection I had made. I’m working in Windows 11 using a Kensington trackball. Am I missing a setting somewhere? I know I’ve had issues with zooming in Rhino8 in Perspective view in the past but this seems worse and I just wondered if it is a definite effect.

Hi Joe,

FWIW I don’t see that using the same beta with a “normal” mouse. Zooming seems very smooth. Checked in OpenGL as well as Direct3D.

Have you got another mouse you could try with?

Regards
Jeremy

p.s. Does disabling the TeDA plugin make a difference?

Something is screwy. I tried it with a logitech mouse, same thing. If I type in Line, I can’t zoom in or out unless I click the left button. But then the line has started where I didn’t want it. This is definitely wrong. What is TeDA plugin?

It seems if I do anything outside the viewport, then move my cursor back to the viewport I must click in the viewport before I can zoom in or out with either the mouse wheel or my track ball. It’s as if the focus is locked in wherever you last were.

If I’m in the viewport and click the trackball button that brings up previous instructions, then I can zoom. For instance I can click to do a rectangle that I’ve done previously and then zoom. But if I go outside to the toolbar and select a rectangle, then come back to the viewport I must click within the viewport before it will let me zoom.

I’m going back to R8. I can’t use R9 with this problem.

Please, what is the TeDA plugin? No one else seems to be concerned about this issue I’m having. I’ve been using Rhino since version 6 and haven’t had this problem. If I can’t fix it, I won’t be upgrading to 9.

I haven’t seen anything similar. Lets run the Reset command to factory settings and remove third party plugins to start troubleshooting.

Hey Joe,
any chance this setting is messed up?

the default is .9

as @japhy mentioned, running the reset command in v9 may be worth doing to get a fresh start.

scale factor is set to 0.9

I disabled TeDASharp whatever the hell it is. I reset Rhino to factory settings and restarted Rhino9. I still have the problem of focus. If I type in Line in the command line and move the cursor into the viewport, I cannot zoom until I click the left button. Mouse or trackball makes no difference.

“TeDA (Tool to enhance Design by Analysis) is a library which can be used within Computer-aided Design (CAD) programs. The library provides a direct interface between CAD software and finite-element solvers”
and
“TeDASharp is the core backend plug-in component used to power Kiwi3d, a structural analysis tool for Rhinoceros and Grasshopper”
Both from google searches.

Looks like you have installed kiwi3d at some stage. Last ref to that on Food4Rhino was in 2023 when it targeted grasshopper in Rhino 6 and 7. If you don’t use it and there is an uninstaller for it I’d get rid of it. If no uninstaller then contact the author for instructions on uninstalling it - I believe there may be various elements including a standalone exe file and you want a clean and complete uninstall.

But whether you want to keep it or lose it, I’d disable the plugin temporarily to see if it has any bearing on your problem.

If you see a problem which other users don’t have it is always good to look for things that are different in your system and that is quite a specialised plugin.

Yes, I tried Kiwi but only in Rhino8 Grasshopper. It didn’t work very well. I should uninstall it. Not sure why TeDAsharp showed up in Rhino9, but it didn’t make any difference when I disabled it.

Granny suck eggs question: did you restart Rhino after disabling it? That is necessary for the change to take effect..

Yes, I did. Rhino actually told me I needed to.

I still have the focus problem that doesn’t show up in Rhino8.

Lets eliminate the plugin aspect.

Search for the Rhino Beta in windows, right click the shortcut and open file location.

Copy the shortcut and edit the properties like so..

Is the issue present while running Safe Mode?

Yes, it’s still there. I’m going to try to call in later if I can get time.

Hi, @Joe4. We just spoke on the phone.

In Windows 11, search for “Mouse Settings” and verify that “Scroll inactive windows when hovering over them” is set to On.

When I turned it Off, I was able to replicate your problem. Turning it back On fixed it.

Many thanks. Hooray it works. Curious why it wasn’t a problem in Rhino8 but no matter.

It’s possible your mouse/trackball software has a per application override that made Rhino 8 work. It’s also possible we have some new code in Rhino BETA that enables this behavior if customers want it. Always glad to help!
