Hi! I recently broke my wrist and so i changed my setup to work exclusively with my Cintiq. Im encountering issues in Rhino (8) with my Wacom that are similar to some of what other people have experience but not quite.
Disabling win. Ink and restarting Rhino fixed my click (tap) issue. However, when using a mouse and let’s say the poly line, you end the command with right click. Not with my Cintiq pen. Any clues anyone? When using the pen, somehow {space bar} is ending my command. Not too much of a big deal since it’s mapped on a foot pedal but I’m still wondering why the pen doesn’t share the same behavior as the mouse?
Also the pen click (tap) acts as the orbiting which can get really annoying in the perspective view
P.S. Sorry for the typos but writing with virtual kboard and one hand is a pain.
Go into cintiq application (Wacom Preferences) and customize your buttons. It might even list Rhino under applications which will allow more customization, you should be able to customize your pen to get it to work for the most part. Like add the right click button to a pen button. Here’s how I have my Bamboo pen setup.
Hi! Yes I was customizing my settings for Rhino only, however, when I add the app to set it up, it adds 2 Rhino icons??! I kept deleting one of them because I really need just one i thought. Well, it turns out that I seem to be needing both cause now it works much better. That said, while this looks like a bug on the Wacom side, I still have some behavior that seems to come from Rhino: Both my right click AND my click on my pen are ALSO triggering the orbiting (or tumbling) of the view. So when I try to end my command, I have to be perfectly still otherwise I rotate my view and nullify the other action I’m trying to accomplish. It seems to be a behavior of Rhino cause my mouse acts the same as well. Can I map those navigation controls to another click and if so, where in the menus can i find it?
That’s weird I don’t have that problem with my Wacom but I have an older Bamboo Wacom pen. Also I can assign the left, right and middle click mouse buttons to any pen button you should be able to too. But I don’t have the option like you do of setting that to a specific program for me reassigning is global and works that way in all programs. Though I can have different preference files that I can load so I have one for Rhino and one for 3dcoat but I have to open Wacom preferences and change that each time.
I have this problem with Wacom pen right click, since on a mouse right click can either repeat last command or orbit/pan the view and act as enter, but when I use my pen it doesn’t work consistently. Sometimes right click works as enter, sometimes it repeats last command, or sometimes it only works as pan. Maybe your right click button is sometimes acting as a repeat last command and is seeing pan as the last command and thus it’s activating that command on your main click? Right click in perspective view will orbit or tumble. If your in V8 I guess you might struggle with auto cplanes too?
I hate to say that I love using my pen but I found that in Rhino it doesn’t work that well with many caveats. I find the pen works great in sculpting programs like 3dcoat or blender where the developers actually took time to make a user friendly pen interface, McNeel has never done that though we have requested it and now with circular pop up menus I wish McNeel would revisit a pen interface. You might need to look into disabling repeat commands like pan in Rhino options and program an enter button or use a hotkey on the keyboard. My wacom tablet has three large buttons I can program and I have enter on one.
Hi @3dsynergy , I forgot that {enter} was also ending a command. Maybe if I replace my right click for the Enter key, I’ll get the behavior I’m looking for.
I also really enjoy using my pen, so much more ergonomic. It’s a shame McNeel isn’t putting much effort into making it a true viable workflow. Like I said, I’m down one arm at the moment but my Cintiq is allowing me to keep working despite my temporary handicap. I have Wacom Express keys, several USB configurable numpads and 4 foot pedals mapped to space, shift, ctrl and alt. My workflow involves Rhino, Blender en Fusion (on occasions) so ergonomics, efficiency and flexibility is essential I find.
Thank you for your time and your help. Ill probably post here one last time once I’ve found the Wacom-Rhino configuration sweet spot
So I’ve tried switching the (right click) for (enter) and it worked. However, Ive realized I need that right click for alternative functions on some commands. BUT, turns out that (spacebar) is also acting like (enter). So I reverted back to my previous config and I’m using my foot pedal instead. I think it’s a pretty good setup for now.
For those interested I’ve attached a screenshot of my Wacom settings. I have the “3D” pen but someone with the regular 2 buttons pen could easily ditch “express wheel menu”. It’s just helpful to me at the moment since I can’t reach my keyboard.
Traditionally that might make sense, but for these devices most 3d programs that allow pen use have custom pen interfaces that work with the pen in a different manner than the mouse. 3Dcoat and blender are two programs that have custom pen interfaces not written by Wacom but by the developers of those programs or by 3rd party plugin developers. Also 2d programs have their own custom interfaces also not written by Wacom but by the developers of the program or by 3rd party plugin developers. Moho 2d animation and Flipbook have their interfaces for pen usage.
Try using a pen in Rhino and then try it in 3Dcoat and you’ll see how much better thought out it can be when the developer of the software writes the interface. I’m sure if you released a plugin we would gladly offer advice on how to optimize it for Rhino.
