no, this was done using grasshopper. The surface where the pins sit on, is curved and the pins follow this curvature. Just a matter of making some points on that surface and use the normal direction for drawing the curves:

Love the pink! Seems like a really good image for a pretty quick render right? Can you explain further the rendering part? What did you use? How is the background achieved?

It’s a quick render indeed and simple setup. Scene is lit with just two rectangular lights. The scene lights are set up in Rhino, the pins are added to the scene through Vray for grasshopper at rendertime.
