Workspace transfer V8 --> WIP

Transferring settings between installations V8 → V8 is easy, just copy the settings folder over, plus any custom .rui. However, now I want to transfer my V8 workspace (toolbars) only to the WIP installation, not necessarily the other settings. How to do that? I’m not sure it’s even advisable to copy the entire settings folder from a V8 install to a WIP install… Or what?

The custom .rui I can of course copy over (I think), however I have also modified the default stuff in V8.

Have you tried copying the settings folder over @Helvetosaur and ran into issues? Copying it over should work perfectly. If it doesn’t, logging bugs would be my next stop.

OK, I willl try… I was hesitant because I thought you might have some new settings or formatting and it would cause problems. Let you know tomorrow.

Anything I’m changing I intend to maintain full compatibility with 8, 7 and earlier

Most of the stuff looks like it came over fine…

The Appearance>Colors didn’t

V8 (settings folder source)

WIP (after settings folder transfer)

Darker background, white layout color etc. didn’t make it over.

Also most icons got the new WIP color versions, but some didn’t, and kept the original icon from V8. However as my custom workspace in V8 is soooo modified - including button images - I guess this somewhat expected.

Yeah that doesn’t surprise me too much. I’ll take a look into the colours, they should transfer as they’re advanced settings .

Any updates on this? I stumbled across the older thread and this wiki article: Transferring Personalized Settings [McNeel Wiki]

And I’m curious if we’re closer to an account-based sync between workstations…Just while I’m thinking wishfully here

Maybe a little closer, but no such thing planned for 9 sorry! When Rhino 9 ships and we start the 10 WIP remind us about it

The easiest way so far to do this transfer is to open Rhino 9, then run optionsmigrate and choose “import data from previous install”

choose v8 and then restart v9 when prompted.

Ideally this should all “just work”

please report any cases that do not.

If your v9 is already set up and you want to test this functionality, run reset on v9, restart, then run optionsmigrate, and restart again.

it should open exactly like your v8 if every thing works as designed.
