WISH: Type in Text Tool Font Search bar

This is a little efficiency thing that drives me crazy sometimes. I’d love it the ‘Text’ tool allowed you to type the whole font name instead of just the first letter. For example, if I am looking to put something in DM Sans (Bold) in the screenshot below, I can type ‘D’ but then have to scroll through all my fonts to find the one I want.

I think the best way to do this would be to narrow down the number of options based on what you’ve typed in the search box so I could, for example, type DM Sans and it would only show the DM Sans font family, or i could type DM Sans Bold and it would only show fonts that match (in this case, just the font I want.)

Just had a design meeting where I was working on adding text to drawings and having to scroll through the font list (the client had a specific brand with 4 different fonts for different types of text) took forever, and could’ve been streamlined if you could just type what you need in the font searchbar. Thanks!

Too many DIN fonts

Repetitive pressing the same character scrolls down but that does not help if you want to search the second character of the font name.

Thanks Martin! Yes, a helpful shortcut, and yes, search that includes multiple characters is really what i’m wishing for :folded_hands:

Hi Paul -

In the current WIP, when I select the “Font” field in the Text dialog, I can type “EU” to jump to “EuroRoman” and hop over “Ebrima”, [some name I can’t read], “Elephant”, “Engravers MT”, “Eras Bold ITC”, “Eras Demi ITC”, “Eras Light ITC”, and “Eras Medium ITC”.

Does that not work on your end?

Hi Wim! I just tested this, and yes, it does! This is a major improvement.

One thing I would recommend from a low-vision (and generally improved) usability perspective on this feature would be to:

  1. have what I’m typing show up in the searchbar at the top

  2. narrow down the options (so if I type GT Super it would only show typefaces with GT Super in the font name and I could browse that font family)

For me the text tool is difficult to use for a few reasons. First, even on my 32” screen I find the font sizes to be difficult to read because they are small. Second, the Text tool window uses something like a 10% gray for the text tool window, and then the font menu is like a 20% or 30% gray - which means the contrast is reduced when I’m searching for fonts and I have to squint and lean in every time I am trying to find a particular typeface.

That said, when I’m annotating or laying out my architecture drawings I really only use a handful of typefaces, maybe 12 or so total, so I wonder if the best solution to this problem would be to have an option to operate the text tool from the command line. Something where you could set up a macro to input a font preference and font size… Then there would be no need to comb through menus at all…

Little UI tweaks can make improvements but for me, a legally blind rhino user, the command line is always king.

You can create custom annotation styles
