Wish: Rhino 9 icons with more contrast

RH-88271 Icons have lower contrast in WIP

RH-88272 Icon colors and contrast

It would be enough to keep the original blue of the icons in the Rhino sidebar, make the color of the other icons less “lime” and intensify the light blue of the SubD icons. Everything else would look better, more incisive and the aesthetic character of Rhino that we have all been used to for years would remain unchanged.
The current Rhino 9 Wip palette seems to have come out of a cartoon, a children’s game.

  1. Thicker outlines help to distinguish the icons easily, but the outlines of the Rhino V8 icons are way too thick. The outlines of V7 icons are nearly perfect, but I would make them something between V7 and V8 (thicker than the outlines of V7, but thinnner than V8);

  2. High contrast square black dots with white center fill in V7 icons are better than the modern round dots with less contrasty center fill. While the round dots are more pleasing to the eye, the square ones are slightly ugly but far easier to distinguish;

  3. Lime green in general is a risky colour, because many colour-blind people see it either as green, yellow, orange, pink, gray etc. When I check the lime green icons in a Paint program, I see their RGB code, however, my colour-blind vision works in a different way and I see those icons in all of the aforementioned colours, depending on the shade and intensity. :smiley:

  4. Gray accents in Rhino V8 icons that replaced the white accents in V7 don’t look good on slightly darker tab background colour other than white. As I use medium grey tab background, the V7 icons look considerably better than the V8 icons.

For me, the best shade of blue is lapis lazuli, more commonly known as ultramarine blue. At most, if you really have to change the type of blue in Rhino 9, you could add a new icon or option to bring back the old blue from previous versions of Rhino.

I think new colours allow for more contrast.

Black outlines vs lighter shade of blue is easier to distinguish than black outlines vs dark blue.
The lighter base colours enable this.

The colour coding is strong and clear. Good contrast between each set. Overall a good selection.

I certainly can’t speak for those who are colour blind but I see more contrast here than previously with Rhino 8.

I have pretty much stopped using 8 now and just work in WIP but when I do go back it does feel a backward step.

Change was needed and this feels like progress to me.
