The way it works in Blender is indeed very nice, but I agree that mode dependent tools are very confusing. I remember from the old T-Splines days that there was this mode to switch between normal typing commands and typing single letter commands. Even that was often very annoying. You had to look if the heads up display was active or not, I often made mistakes.
Got it.
I have been using T-Splines on a daily basis and that was exactly my experience.
If need be, map the button to CapsLock, then youāll see it on the keyboard that you have a temporary exception. If it confuses you, itās probably not your thing, so you probably wonāt switch much. Switching isnāt vital either in my opinion, but it will be there anyways to accommodate for both uses (Single hotkey vs Default). So might as well make it useable for those who may want to.
And there could be a small pop-up notification that you are indeed in this mode that fades after X ms.
I see how modes could optimize a workflow.
My projects however vary a lot. Iād need to categorize the projects⦠But then again I might need command x from mode A in mode B⦠no thanks
Yeah, I mean, why not have multiple sets of direct hotkeys that you can switch to with a toolbar dropdown to satisfy the needs for each project?
E: Or to load a co-workerās scheme. When they want to show you something.
There are people using 5 layer deep keyboards, that aināt my thing either, but they swear by it. If thereās a will thereās a way.
Hello,
This is also a long time need for me with a difference.
I donāt want Rhinoās behavior to change, but I would like to be able to change it when I need to.
I have a number of custom commands that would like to have direct keyboard shortcuts.
I also have a number of contexts (outside of custom commands) that would appreciate being able to capture user input from the keyboard.
In short, in my case, I donāt want Rhino to embed direct shortcuts, but temporarily allow me to define/script one.

Rhino imitates AutoCAD. Why donāt you suggest that the command line of CAD also execute shortcuts. Itās obviously unrealistic. Nobody can accept it
A few hotkeys that donāt interfere with Rhinoās behavior because no commands start with those characters.
in Blender:
Isolate selection: ā/ā.
The front, right, top view, ā¦: ā2ā, ā4ā, ā8ā, ā¦
Center on selection: ā.ā
Itās much faster than nivigation in Rhino.
The numeric keypad + ā<ā is a set of keys that can be added to the list of āKeyboardā options.
Basically all the symbol, arrow and numeric keys are inaccessible for keyboard shortcuts. Those would need to be added and have been requested quite often. I didnāt find any particular thread on them though.

We have considered this, but how do you get to the other 10+ commands that start with āLā or āWā?
that is the reason other developers are using a shortcut to even enter a command terminal. considering that a trained user would rather use his shorcuts than entering all the commands anew, it might make sense thinking about the benefic.
then let it be optional and you make everybody happy or more, if one can turn it on and off on the fly.
understood,
right click on the mouse = enter
you can use that instead of the space bar if the spacebar click is an issue.
Not trying to dissuade your line of thought, just sharing info that many donāt know.
to be clear, we do not imitate software anyone else makes.

I am aware of using multiple keys, but at some point there is a limit to how much I can memorise before having to look up an alias.
For me it works to make Aliases pretty long with a descriptive part towards the end. That way Iām also not completely lost when I look at my āmost recent commandsā which I have on middle mouse button
HTH, Jess

Why do you say this? Itās obviously not true. If it were Rhino would not be able to open a file, much less select from a dropdown list. Nor would we be able to draw a line by specifying two points or print our output.
My point is that there are a lot of things that are done by many applications that are so industry standard that we donāt even notice that they are. How do these standards come into being? Through evolution of user preferences.
So please donāt hide behind such a lame statement to stand in the way of the evolution. Itās just a thinly veiled version of ānot invented hereā-ism.
I still love you and respect your Rhino expertise and skills and all that you do to help Rhino users. But, really, cāmon.

industry standard
In my eyes Rhino isnāt the standard CAD but one that does more things than anyone can imagineā¦
Maybe I wasnāt clear.
We do not copy anyone elseās software.
I was lumping imitate and copy in the same box and that in hindsight was less accurate than I intended.
Non of this is related to this topic in any way though

We have considered this, but how do you get to the other 10+ commands that start with āLā or āWā?
Hi Bob,
If you have considered this, then I think this thread has some good suggestions to at least revisit the idea. Direct shortcuts if implemented in a smart way in Rhino could give the UI yet another great boost.
( and no, the idea is not to have āLā fire up all the L⦠commands, rather allow to assign any action to instant key press, like Keyboards Shortcuts do in Rhino currently. The question is how to access/enable this mode without breaking what currently works well in Rhino )
