Window Layouts Restore is Broken 8.4.24044,15002

So as an attempt to TRY To fix all the contain stuff that got utterly broke on my work machine update to 8.4.24044, I had the bright Idea of exporting all the cotainers on my home 8.4.24044 install that isn’t all jacked up.

So the idea was to export the working install layouts, then import them on the broke install layouts and do a restore, except for one small problem. Restore doesn’t work,. It treats it was an update:

which results in this:

which is the exact opposite of what I’m trying to do, so unfortunately there’s no way currently to “back up” then “restore” your containers and layouts when an update breaks them, leaving no option but to manually recreate the whole mess.

Ughh.

Hi @LewnWorx,
Sorry about the timing of this issue for you.
We have a few more questions for you when it is convenient.

Did you try the SR3 link that I set.
I assume this is the Monterey computer.

Can you delete the Mark 1s ton this computer?
The import a “Mark 1st” from the backup that you did?

And what happens if you install the SR3?
I am going to open a support ticket for this.
You will see an email soon.

Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

I don’t think exporting containers actually works currently either… Correct me if I’m wrong.

@Helvetosaur

Mitch:

Will let ya know in a minute actually. They did export, not sure if they’ll import.

Post covid brain fog making all this stuff rougher than it needs to be.

You wouldn’t by chance know how to get the command line to “re-dock” in the left side panels? It somehow undocked, and it’s not a panel, it’s sorta it’s own beast from the looks of things and I have no idea how to get it back to the side panel, as now when I type, the command prompt shows up in a floating window thing, and the options for whatever command I’ve issued show up in yet another tiny floating window, invariably on one of my other 2 4K displays that the current rhino window is NOT on.

I have no idea what cause it to go from where it’s always be to this floating thing, nor how to get it back, and it doesn’t even show up when you search for it in help (which if you haven’t tried that lately is it’s own mess as you get to type 1 character then it punts the focus someplace else meaning you have to recheck in the search text entry thing in the help panel for every character you type and then wait for the auto complete to take several seconds to narrow down the list and punt your focus elsewhere again).

@Helvetosaur @mary

To answer the container import / export question:

From the manage containers window you CAN export them, but they do NOT import.

The selection dialog comes up when you hit the import button (folder icon at bottom of screen) and when you navigate to and select the file it does not Import (Least not in SR5 WIP).

Restoring layouts in SR5 is taking an inordinate amount of time. After 15 minutes of spinning beach ball I had to force quit. On subsequent launch with nothing but new model (no template) I was able to restore in about 15 seconds.

I WAS however finally able to get the command line to show back up in the left side bar up top…

This turns out to. be the culprit:

I found it searching for anything “command” in advanced, and thought that may be the item.

When I found it, it was set to true which seemed odd as that meant it (in theory) should have been showing up.

On a hunch, I set it to false, exited the prefs, came back in, searched for it and turned it back on and THAT finally brought it back.

It still, however materializes the little window (now in addition to as opposed to JUST the little window for the options):

Weird, but I don’t really care if its’ there as well as long as it’s in the left sidebar so I don’t have to go trying to find in on whichever of the 3 4K displays it happens to pop up on.

When I get some free time (this has already cost almost an entire day) I’ll nuke the duplicate named containers, create new ones from scratch that DON’T have the name of any of the factory ones, get those set up and save the window layout from all that as what will hopefully be a recovery mechanism if this stuff goes wonky again.

Actually, that DIDN’T Work:

Rhino.Options.Themes.LeftSidebarIsCommandSidebar

Disappears the second you set it. Was working for a bit but now broke again after relaunch.

So Fresh launch SR4 (or SR5 WiP, doesn’t matter does it in both):

Before even opening a file or making new:

There it is, set to true (but it doesn’t actually work if you continue. (you still get the pop up window vs the left pane).

So I set it to false to try to force the “toggle” that worked (once).

Go elsewhere (another pref panel, in this case General.

Go back to advanced, still there.

Set it:

New Model:

Command line not there:

Open Prefs:

Go to advanced, and it’s gone:

Vanished without a trace.

Utterly repeatable. Quit, reopen, and you can replicate this all day long.

So I’m back to not having a command line in the left pane, and having to chase options windows over 3 screens when they come up.

Hi @LewnWorx,
Curious are you using the floating window option?
Options → General → Floating toolbar
This is your preference, correct?

If you turn it off, just start any command like Line, it will pop back open the Main 1 + command line window.
All you need to do is double click in the Toolbar title bar to return it to default location.
Here is a quick video on Rhino 8 Command window options.

Testing the .RHW save and restore in Rhino 8 sr4, sr5 and sr6.
I have Ventura and Monterey available.

Thanks, yeah I had tried turning it on and off, with zero luck on either.

Max has had me do a full reset which I’m working through now (and that appears to have fixed the issue). Still restoring all the rest of the stuff (aliases, etc).
