Why is shrinkwrap so fast and slow?

Long time Rhino user here, now trying it out for pointcloud work - I’m surprised at how quickly Rhino can shrinkwrap a 1.8M point pointcloud, and at how slowly it runs if I ask it to color the mesh - is it using very clever algorithms and data structures for the meshing, then brute force to find the nearest points again for the colors? Any ways of improving that as we often use pointclouds with 10s of millions of points and I would rather avoid using another tool for colouring?

Hi Graham -
We have that issue on our list as RH-70711 Shrinkwrap use RTree for vertex colors
(and RH-79148).
I’ve added this thread.
