Why does this surface present with this defect?

What causes this to happen, and how do I fix/prevent it?

Hi Hugo - the surface has a kink in it there - that is a hard corner - but the display mesh wants it to be smooth - you can clean up by DivideAlongCreases > SplitAtTangents=Yes but that will become a polysurface.
