It never works without it looking strange.

There was nothing in your file that looked strange to me. Perhaps you could further explain what you are trying to do and show where it gets strange?

So I want to extrude the area by 0.35 based on the y axis. Then I want to round the edges of the rim by 0.12 but that doesn’t work. The curves cannot be selected correctly and if I separate them from the Surface and select all of them individually, it looks strange.

hi you have a missalignment between the curve and the surface edge:
if you choose the surface edge instead of the circle you can extrude, join and fillet without problems:
Hello - in addition to what Diego points out, it looks to me like the object is not aligned as you may expect - - the wheel is not completely vertical but tipped slightly - that is, when you created the revolved surface, the axis was only approximately parallel to the Y axis. I would fix that before doing anything else.
