It’s probably a fall-out of the new Compact and Dark themes that @stevebaer is prototyping. These tags have been there for quite a while now (in order for McNeel to find threads that they haven’t addressed yet) but have been invisible until now.
Indeed, they are for us drones to know if there are topics that need still our attention. I’m looking mostly at unhandled ones related to Raytraced and possibly rendering. Others have different areas of interest and expertise.
(I pressed the ‘Handled’ button I have, so for this topic you should see no Unhandled tag, until something happens again).
Yeah, I remember when they were first instated we had the same problem, but I thought it was “handled”… 
@sam it looks like staff tags are showing up for everyone now with themes enabled. Maybe I should be mentioning @discourse now for help

Apologies for the delays on this - many of us were out for Thanksgiving. I
believe I’ve resolved the issue for you. From what I could tell your
previous theme was “default”. Default included a number of theme
components, including “Unhandled tag styling”, which is how you hid the
tags. I’ve added the 5 theme components to each of your user selectable
themes, and the unhandled tag is now hidden again.
