Why add crease is not working for naked edges?

Here’s a straight edge of a SubD surface:

I can also remove the crease:

But I cannot add it back using add crease.
Why?

you have to crease the point at the corner… there is nothing to crease on a naked edge because…it’s a naked edge. BUT you can crease a point which has access to 2 or more edges.

when you removed the creases, you actually removed the creases from the points, not the edge. It’s counter intuitive but that’s the way it works.
