I have Rhino 7 and Rhino 8 BETA installed.
Rhino 8 BETA appears in the taskbar with the Rhino 7 button. Stacked buttons when multiple instances are open, no matter which version.
So when does Rhino 8 gets its own button in the taskbar?

Hi Martin -
I’m not completely clear on what you are seeing on your end.
This is what I see here:
-wim
Windows 10, no Rhino 7 instance open
I have Rhino feeder installed so maybe that’s causing issues @jeremy5 ?
Are you opening the model files by double clicking them, or are you opening them from the Beta open dialogs?
If the former, have you added the Beta details to the Rhinofeeder ini file?
If I double click an R8 file it opens in R8 and displays the Beta icon in the taskbar.
I’m seeing this behavior as well. It’s been the same for the past couple of versions as I recall:
Here’s a video capture:
Edit: Apologies, this is not the same issue I think. My bad.
This is my ini file. The directories are correct. Rhino 8 BETA is installed in a folder called Rhino 8 WIP.
No matter if I open a document by double clicking or by opening Rhino 8 BETA first, I never see a Rhino 8 button in the taskbar.
RhinoFeeder.exe is saved in my Documents folder.
Yes, that’s what I’d expect to see.
Are you running Windows 10 or 11?
On 10 I see the stacked items have the icon of whichever Rhino was used first. Then if I hover over them to expand the list, each has its correct item. With R7 opened first and R8 2nd the stack shows the R7 icon. If I close the R7 instance the icon is taken from the second instance, ie changes to the Beta.
Sounds like your rig is doing something different…
If you look in the Program Files\Rhino 8 WIP\System folder for Rhino.exe and Rhino.ico, do they show the Beta icon?
I’m running Windows 10.
Just to try I changed the open with setting for Rhino 8 files to Rhino 8 BETA. It does not affect the button in the taskbar. I still see the Rhino 7 button.
I dragged the Rhino.exe file from the Rhino 8 WIP folder into the taskbar which created a Rhino BETA button. When I click it, Rhino 8 BETA opens and a Rhino 7 button appears in the taskbar. Funny
I’ve seen this in the past too. I guess I’ll live with it until Rhino 8 is released and I’ll get rid of Rhino 7 asap.
What happens if you start with no Rhinos running (including none in the background) and double click on the Program Files\Rhino 8 WIP\System\Rhino.exe file? i.e. cutting out shortcuts etc.
I don’t see that here.
Sorry David. that question was directed at Martin.
I don’t know if this will help you, but google “Rebuild Windows 10 icon cache”.
I am deleting my contributions to this thread since they are about a different issue than the OP reported.
Thanks for the idea. I tried twice but no change. Rhino 8 should be released soon…
