What is the process for Creating and using Titleblocks in Layout?!

Alright first off (and probably quite clear) I am a new user of Rhino 8. I am trying to find the best practice of creating Titleblocks in my Layout view. So far I have modeled a Tabloid sized Titleblock with Text Fields that are linked to the Layout User Text panel so i’m able to update them for specific clients. Where do I go from here? Here are my questions specifically -

  1. Is there a specific process for saving this template and reusing?
  2. Do I need to format the titleblock in a certain way?
  3. What is the best way to add a client logo?
  4. Is there a streamlined way to resize for larger prints like ARCH D, etc?

I have searched the internet and can’t seem to find the answers. Again, I am still new and learning so apologies if im not grasping a super simple concept! Thanks!

Hi Austin,
Take a look at this series on text fields.
And then in these tutorials, we set up the model on a layouts.

In most cases, we also add a title block that we make or one that is downloaded.
The tutorial models sets have example title block that you can investigate.
The tutorials have file to download, and links are in the video description.

1. Is there a specific process for saving this template and reusing?
A block in your custom template is the best way. The block needs to be created on the layout.
2. Do I need to format the titleblock in a certain way?

In general, if the title block is to be used on a layout, then the curves & text in the title block should be created in the Layout and then associated into a Block object.

If it is not to be used on a Layout but “old school” on the model, then the curves and text will need to be created on the model. This is less common, but still see it being done in rare cases.
Add curves, images (logos) and text. Assign the objects to layers with Print Width. Block it on a layout. Use fields to help automatically fill out the title block when possible.

3 What is the best way to add a client logo?
Picture command (special surface with a texture)

4. Is there a streamlined way to resize for larger prints like ARCH D, etc?
Once you have a layout in a file with a title block on it, you can add it to another file with the ImportLayout command.

Let us know if you have any specific questions.

@mary Do you typically make the block in model space in a seperate Rhino file and then insert it into the project file on the layout? I did this and I am getting odd behavior in the Block Defininitions list.

Hi @larchitect,
This is above.
The block geometry should be made on the layouts, and then defined your block.

Rhino designates specifically annotations as being model or layout.
So they need to be made in the space they will be used.
Curves are more forgiving.

As a general rule, if you make your title block geometry, curves and text on the Layout, then Block them together, you will be in good shape.

When you have the title block on the layout, copy the layout, ImportLayout to another model, or customize your template to include the layout - all are good ways to share the layout and block.

Please email the block you are struggling with to tech@mcneel.com, Attn Mary.
Include a link to the this thread and a description of the issue you are seeing.

Hope this helps.
