Vray rhino mac when will be available, anybody knows?

Just posting to show my support regarding V-Ray for Rhino on Mac. I’ve been in contact with Chaos Group and specifically requested this software (most recently in last august), without any luck.

This is a real bummer since we now have the fully fledged Rhino 6 on Mac… The only thing missing for running or entire work suit on the Mac platform is V-Ray.

The issue is that Macs don’t use NVIDIA GPUs. How would GPU rendering work? That is unless VRay Rhino starts rendering on AMD cards. Im not sure why VRay in Maya and C4D use AMD cards, but not on Rhino.

But even if there is VRay Rhino Mac that renders on AMD, you would have to use your display’s GPU to render a scene and it would be too taxing on the card. You can easily build PCs with 3 GPUs or create entire render farms, but not so much on a Mac.

V-Ray is perfectly capable of rendering with the CPU. Of course, a CUDA GPU would add extra power and enable Hybrid rendering. But just CPU rendering would probably be sufficient as we can get Mac’s with high-end CPU’s.

True true. The new MacBooks have 6-core cpus and few apps make use of the extra cores.

Thinking the same, Mac hardware has improved a lot in recent time…
I hope that they will put V-Ray for Rhino for Mac on their roadmap soon

I am testing Maxwell 5 in Rhino Mac 6. I like the workflow, integration is much better than before, multilight is killer. To those who are in search for a Render Engine for Rhino Mac 6 I can definitely encourage you to test out the Maxwell Render Engine. On their homepage you can register and test it for 30 days.

Just posting to show my support for V-ray for Rhino on Mac if the folks form Chaos Groups are listening… I have been a heavy rhino and v-ray user for the last several years and the only reason I haven’t switch to macs right now is because there is no V-ray. New pro macs are making it ever more tempting to switch…

My guess is the Rhino for Mac category in our forum is not a good place to pass information on to Chaosgroup.

I don’t have a forum or email address for Chaosgroup but I’m sure some other Vray user does.

There already is a post regarding V-Ray for Rhino for Mac on the Chaosgroup forum. Maybe we could show our support in that thread and also refer to this discussion here. :sunglasses:

It looks like only 1 Rhino user bothered to ask for Mac Rhino Vray.
That is essentially no demand.

The more postings ON THEIR FORUM the more likely they will understand the need and number of potential users.

I totally agree…but sometimes it crash

So far on my computer it works fine!

In the mean time: An Octane X Render plugin for Rhino Mac is in the plans. The new Octane X renderer (currently in beta) supports GPU-rendering on macOS with the Metal API. Sounds really exciting and could be a great alternative! :100:

Side note: Octane X has been officially released!!!

This nugget from your link Rudolf:

“Octane X is fully compatible with macOS Catalina and will be available for free ****** for new users on Macs with the release of macOS Big Sur coming this fall.”

****** Octane X | PR1 is available today for current OctaneRender Studio and Enterprise subscribers. In the coming months, a full commercial version of Octane X, with one year of maintenance, will be made available – for free – to all new users activating Octane X on 2019 or later models of Mac Pro, iMac and MacBook Pro running macOS Big Sur."

Interpret as free 1 year demo???

Yeah, if you have the right machine

@ec2638 I did not understand it fully yet, but as far as I know this offer goes if you have a Mac of 2019 or newer and are a new user on macOS Big Sur. So to get it free, I think you have to wait for Big Sur (?)

interesting, is it available to test now ?

Bella render has a mac OS version I believe… this is a JD Hill project (the awesome guy who made maxwell work for rhino)

If anyone is interested in a MacOS octane x plugin please see here:

They haven’t made it yet and it sounds like it is up in the air subject to how many requests they get.
