The issues above may not affect everyone, but everyone who uses such hardware.
Ok, first the most important things, and probably eventually then this issue.
Steve/David,
as I wrote in another other post, related to Rhino 6 on Macbook 17" with the Radeon graphic card, TestMaxSpeed, even without any geometry in the file, shows that Rhino 6 is significantly slower than Rhino 5. Am I right in assuming that, unless I will change my machine for one with the most recent GPUs, there is no hope that I can get at least the same graphic performance I am having on Rhino 5? With the last WIP installations I have not noticed any kind of improvement, apart from crashes, on top of the performance problem. I am probably the only one in the world still using these great machines and not having a company paid computer every year!
The price for higher performance is lower performance as it is now.
I also hope this will change before V6 is released.
It could be complicated to sell V6 updates when also new hardware is neededā¦
Thanks Charles. GPUs such as NVIDIA GTX 1060, 1080 etcā¦ are only recent additions on the market, so I would guess, despite my lovely Macbook Pro 17" is now considered a dinosaur, it will take some time also for many other Rhino users to have such high end graphic cards! I am now considering a Razer Blade 17", needing mobility, but I wish I could work for a company paying this for me, as I am self employed unfortunately! Basic price $3,999.99! buying something less or second hand would immediately put me in an already other prehistory dinosaur position, because of the VR compatibility, which I am sure will soon become another necessity very soon!
We made some optimizations this last week that may help some of the systems described in this thread. Please test with the latest WIP released today and let us know if you notice any improvements.
Thanks,
-Steve
Uhmm, no, standard basic āhardwareā, operating under the conditions promised by RH that it will work well without having to purchase any hardware upgrade. Have -you_ encountered a particular HARDWARE profile as a solution to the problems I outline ?
Raytraced mode is completely different than our other display modes and is based on the Cycles renderer. I donāt know if we can really promise that specific mode will work well without different hardware.
Requiring a potentially expensive hardware upgrade, that NEON did NOT require ? See related add I JUST uploaded. Somebody in a related post uploaded a Green Jade Dragon that was really NICE ! Iām Confident I could achieve a similar result if I PURCHASE ( for ~$300) I-RAY from Nvidea, AND an expensive upgrade to my video card. Currently Iām using a High-Mid-Range Nvidea card just a couple of years old with LATEST drivers, (Iāll keep the particulars quiet for now, for the purposes of this conversation), and TYPICALLY do 100-300 + Component Assemblies with little noticeable loss in performance. NOW I hear that I might get the promised performance with a ābetterā hardware profile ?
Also, I was looking for the āEditā switch to add a related comment to my previous reply. Not seeing it, but that might be on me ? Oh ! THERE it is ! !
Shaded and Rendered results look good for your system.
Please note that Neon did not ship with Rhino 5 and that it is completely different technology than Cycles (raytraced). Raytraced will most likely improve in performance over time, but I canāt really make any guarantees.
Steve - THANKS ! I JUST downloaded the LATEST WIP and the results are outlined in an uploaded pic in a reply below. LOVE the work, still looking for usability in the NEON replacement.
Thanks again !
-C.
Hard to say what is going on without a 3dm. If you could attach it with the material you used I can take a look.
VERY GOOD NEWS!
And yes, the display feels much smoother than in the previous versions.
I didnāt make any speed tests.
For me, this slow display issue is solved.
Thank you for that.
BTW, of course on an Atom CPU, I donāt expect a good Cycles performance, as it will use CPU only.
And yes, it is slow, but it works ok.
No problem with Cycles.
Charles
Yay
Iāll be always looking for ways to improve also CPU performance, though!
OR - I COULD just load a 300Mb Assembly and just SEE how well your system performs.
I am LARGELY very happy with many improvements, but I post a pic below that COMPLETELY COVERS every single issue I mention in this thread. Iāve mentioned clearly that Iām using what may be THE most common hardware configuration reasonably expectable (?) for anyone NOT updating their units every single year.
REALLY OLD Apple ācompatiblesā may still enjoy the EXCELLENT work done in RH-5, and may fall WITHIN some of the things I mention here, but just as much as Intel/PC units of the same era may be starting to fall behind, maybe some of the Apples do too ā¦
2-3 years for ANY system is probably typical and certainly applies in my case . I have an I-7 clocked at a STANDARD 3.4 - 4.0 Ghz (no overclock), so nothing exceptional as far as main processor is concerned, but no slouch, either. Iām using a reasonable amount of RAM but could probāly comfortably increase my 16 to 32Gb, and a STRONG SSD, and NVIDEA Video card I may or may not upgrade soon. That said, Iād put my system performance up against ANYTHING youāll find in MOST mainstream offices these days.
Iām NOT seeing a compelling reason to upgrade my Video package at this point, as RAYTRACED remains a non-starter for me for issues only PARTLY related to speed performance, altho to be fair, speed HAS greatly improved recently. Still, no matter HOW fast its gotten, SPEEDING toward an unusable result is NOT a āspeed improvementā as far as I can tell.
BEST to license a stripped-down version of I-Ray from Nvidea for release with RH-6 or as a VERY-LOW cost add-on (re: NEON & testable in WIP), ASSURING compatibility with ALL - Legacy Nvidea cards, NEW Nvidea cards AND ALL AMD cards, OLD - AND - NEW that have NVIDEA compatible modes or native operating modes that RH already works well in. As a follow-on-sales point for potential customers, NVIDEA would probably have a BASIC minus-features-version it could license for native RH-6 release/add-on (NEON). Seriously, guys, after THIS MUCH TIME, thereās really NOT a reasonable justification for continued performance issues at this level. You probāly COULD have just PAID the guy that GAVE you NEON, but I digress .
Look, LOTS of āopinionsā, yeah I get it, EVERYONE has an āopinionā, but really- take a look at the PIC I posted before commenting replies, so any further conversation can proceed to a successful destination !
Thanks, and ALL the BEST from Texas -
- Chuck !
Nathaniel - GOOD work so far.
As I said before having the file to investigate would be even better, so let me ask again: can you please share with me your file so I know what actually is going on? Any further discussion on the picture without the file doesnāt make much sense.
