V8's Menus are bit too buried--With Crash

I am sorry, but UI-wise, we see an image selector, but there is nothing to indicate that anything else can be changed by clicking to the right of Background Image.

The view mode selectors look like they are tabbed controls for the box below–and not the widget area above.

The elevator box appears disembodied.

Where has the Intensity control gone off to?
And looking at this menu, can anyone just point to the image above and tell me what I clicked on to get here? : )

I am not sure why the mirroring isn’t by the mapping.

[I have a lighting problem in V8 coming from V7. I guess it’s intensity?]

I thought that perhaps, V8 didn’t realize that it was an environment. I tried the drop-down to remind it that it was an environment…

This crashed Rhino so hard there was no bug-reporter.

Using lightbulbs for check-boxes?!
In a program that uses lights.
Why!?

It wouldn’t fly at Apple, either.

Intensity control is only ever shown when using HDRi textures (exr, hdr) . With regular images (png, jpg, etc) the control is not shown. Do you think it should?

You clicked on either the small thumbnail after Background Image label, or on the texture name on the same line.

I didn’t understand this - what mirroring?

Do you mean you clicked on the dropdown that in your last GUI screenshot says Bitmap Texture, then selected Basic Environment from there? I see a crash there indeed, on the Mac I do get the Rhino crash reporter. Logged as RH-80260 Crash changing render content type from texture to environment

Nathan, thank you for responding.

Well, in some drawings, I used the intensity to throw light from a material, albeit it wasn’t a HDRi. It was just a standard fare 8bpp texture. Perhaps the value is still in there, but now there’s no way to change it. Perhaps the material has to be deleted and recreated.

“I didn’t understand this - what mirroring?”
I don’t know, but it reads like it can mirror textures. I never tried it, but mapping is probably a better home for it, if it affects mapping.

I understand that there are a lot of UI here. Perhaps they were afraid of putting too much on one menu, like Max’s sub-object modeling, but idea relationships as well as flow are important in UI.

Thank you for reporting the bug. It corrupted the temp file, too, corrupting half of the texture paths in it. I didn’t lose anything, though. Two hours, and I haven’t got anything done.

The disable Raytraced window effects is here somewhere…
I found it it once.

The help used to tell the user where something was…
https://docs.mcneel.com/rhino/8/help/en-us/index.htm#properties/posteffects.htm?Highlight=rending%20effects

After searching again, I see that apparently a star means effects. : P

The V8 rendering does seem faster than V7. : )
I wish ETA instead of elapse time made it into V8. Most of the way, Rhino Render’s progress is very linear.

Not in an environment. At most you could have done this using an emissive material.

Ah, I guess you’re referring to the alternate tiles part. That has always been next to the texture 2d preview, in Rhino 7 it used to be check boxes with text. I would’ve expected some tooltips there, though.

edit: tooltip bug logged as RH-80262 Tooltips missing from buttons next to texture 2d preview

Thank you about the environment.

Is there a way to shut-off/toggle the post processing for Raytraced, and have it stay?
The the effects have to be shut off with every preview/open?

@DavidEranen do you know how this is supposed to work? Or is that still an open issue?

It’s still an open issue: https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-79777/Post-effects-should-stay-off-per-view.
