V8 versus corrupt 3dm

a bit of a corner case, but if you have a 3dm that is in your recent 3dms, and so is shown in the splash screen, and that file gets corrupted, rhino may fail to open (you will just have one rhino.exe sitting doing nothing in the task manager, for each time you try to start rhino)

it will also make explorer unstable, when the shell extension tries to generate a summary and get a thumbnail for the file (for example if you have the details pane open); you may not be able to rename or delete the file, as apparently the shell extension is trying to deal with it, and is stuck

this is on win11 and 8.3.24009.15001, did not check with other rhino versions

to produce an example file it may be enough to open the 3dm in notepad2 and hit save; here are two files, where the corrupt one was created this way:

cube.3dm (57.9 KB)
cube-corrupted.3dm (58.0 KB)

hopefully those files work, it was a bit of a trick to get the corrupted one, since the shell extension wants to access it, but it seemed file copy was ok for the upload; if not you will have to corrupt the file “in place” after getting it into your recent files
