V7 on old system w/ 2 GB video memory

My desktop system dates to 2012 and only has 2 GB of video memory, not the minimum 4 GB recommended for V7. It does have 16 GB of memory. I have been running V7 without problems other than with multiple very large shaded meshes (millions of faces) rotating and panning the view can lag substantially.
