V7 file kills V8 and WIP

Hi McNeel’ies
I have a 200MB V7 file that will not open in V8 or V9. In both, the command prompt states that Rhino “Successfully read file”, but then hangs/stalls/crashes Rhino (at least for the 15-20 minutes my patience lasted) and I have to use the task manager to kill Rhino. The file contains 150+ blocks that started life as VisualARQ elements, but have now been “exploded” to ordinary Rhino blocks. Do you want me to upload the file, so that you might be able to find out what’s causing R8/R9 to hang? I’ve tried to copy/paste the whole thing as well, but no luck. Also tried exploding the blocks - still no dice.

Hi Jakob -

Yes, please.

Have you tried importing (instead of opening) the file in a new file from a factory-default template with all viewports set to wireframe?
-wim

Hi @wim
Will upload file - and yes, it imports fine into a blank file. I suspect it might be some sort of left-over data from VisualARQ, but just guessing. I just wondered if you wanted the file anyway for analysis/testing  Will link to this thread :+1:

Hi again
Actually… spoke to soon! It does indeed import fine, but as soon as I tried to shade the model, my computer came to a grinding halt. Will test some more!

Hi @wim
OK, so I found a bad mesh in one of the blocks (the table feet). For some reason V7 allows it to open (and hasn’t flagged it as bad, but SelBad does identify it as bad if you edit the block), V8/V9 doesn’t. Don’t know if this is something you would want to tune up, but I’ll upload the file for reference.

Hej Jakob -

In the file that you uploaded, I can’t find any bad objects at all in either Rhino 7 or Rhino 8. I’ve also exploded all blocks in both versions to look for bad objects.

In Rhino 8, that files opens in less than 10 minutes here (I didn’t time it, but I was working on other things, and when I turned back to Rhino about 10 minutes later, it had opened fine).

Hi @wim
OK, that’s well odd! Got a mail from Agustina (McNeel Europe) and it seemed that she had problems opening it in V8 as well. I just tried the file right now, and lo and behold: It did open in V8 - but then froze the computer completely, as I tried to shade the model. Really strange behavior and there’s definitely something weird going on with that file, but let’s just leave it at that. I found the bad objects and the “clean” file behaves as it should. Actually, SelBadObjects doesn’t pick them up in V7 either, but MeshRepair labels them as a bad mesh. I’ll settle for the fact that the file was a mess, and now it’s not :joy:
Thanks for taking a look
Regards, Jakob

Hej Jakob -

It takes way longer on V8 - I’ve put this on the list for an extra look
