V.8 bug? Select through an object when shaded

In Rhino 7 it was possible to “select through” faces when extracting surfaces from a polysurface in Shaded or Rendered display mode.

On a solid box, when using the ExtractSrf command, you could select the front of the box and then click again on the same surface to select the underlying surface on the the other side of the box. In v8 this is not possible so either the object has to be rotated or you should switch to wireframe display.

Is there a setting I have overlooked or is it a v.8 bug?

Hi Christian - at the moment I do not see this working in either version, here - can you post an example from V7, indicating click locations? Note if your pick happens to hit a ‘wire’ like an isocurve, on the occluded face then you will get a selection.

Hi Pascal,

The “select through” works anywhere on the surface and is not dependant on hitting an isocurve or having the “Show isocurves” option on or off.
But it needs to be a polysurface. If you tried with a box made with the Box command, that will define the box as a closed extrusion and you won’t be able to select through.
See screenshots from v7.

hi @christian5 I tried this as well in both Rhino 7 and 8 on Win and Mac, but don’t seem to get a selection dialog in any version. Pls post a sample file in the position you are picking the surfaces, from Rhino 7 where you get the dialog in shaded mode when using ExtractSrf.

Hi Gijs,
It’s not a dedicated selection dialog. It is just when using the regular “extract surface” command that I can click two times to select the surface on the other side of the geometry.

I tested a bit more, and it seems that it is indeed still possible to select through surfaces in v8 with the extract srf command.
It just changed, from left mouse button clicking through a surface in v7, to LMB+drag left in v8.

I posted screen recordings of both v7 and v8 with basic polysurfaces.

hi @christian5 I now see what you mean, yes, in Rhino 8 this is more difficult.
RH-81337 Selecting subobjects through other surfaces

I have this weird behavior when shaded. I some heavy models, sometimes, i’ve notice that when i select objects some objects change to a darker color, but it only appears to change the ones captured in view, once you zoom out you can see which are changed.

I hope you’re able to replicate this, because i’ve seen this a lot. This does not happen in R7.

shading bug

UPDATE:
i found the bug.

Generally i modify the shading material on the shaded view style. This time, usually i move up luminosity. It appears that when i select geometry, in some models, this preset bugs out. I just tried this same model but with the default Shaded view settings and this problem disappears.
