UV mapping pin projection

I’ve only recently started using uv mapping in rhino 8 sr29.
Often I need to have my mesh unwrapped in other software and selecting edge loops just doesn’t work well for triangulated mesh, so being able to select edges in Rhino actually speeds things up dramatically.
I would really like to be able to pin certain parts before unwrapping. The default surface mapping nicely lays out the surfaces, respecting scale to each other. So if you’ve got something like a logo that’s debossed, or text, it would be really nice to be able to select those surfaces and pin them. It would work even better if I could select those surfaces and run a process that aligns them to each other in the best way. In case case like text embossed/debossed, generally those are at the same level, but aren’t necessarily planar so planar mapping wouldn’t always work. Even still, Rhino doesn’t allow you to do planar mapping of only Some surfaces.

One of the best things about Rhino’s uv unwrap is that is stores the edges you used as seams, so if you need to remesh your object, you can just recalculate the uvmap again. Of course, that doesn’t work if you have to change any portion of your surfacing, but it’s something.

Is there actually a way to choose certain surfaces to either pin, or tell the system to not deform them? It would be amazing if we could basically assign different surfaces “relax priority.” or something like that. Logo? Keep it rigid. Tiny surfaces between a deboss? You can probably stretch those out a bit.
Right now if I need a single UV map, I’m just doing 2 UV maps, then using one of them as reference and tweaking the unwrapped UVs in blender, but that’s a lot of time spent for dense mesh.

I’m just looking for some ways to save some extra time with UV mapping, and Rhino seems like a good start, but I’m not finding ways to do some tasks that I would really like to do. For example if you have a conical surface, unwrapped it Should form a curved surface, but in some cases you would want it to be just straight cylindrically mapped. I would love to be able to do that, then pin that surface, and then unwrap the other surfaces around it.

Are there ways of doing something like that?

Hi @Andy_Engelkemier1

I’m sorry, there are no tools to do that. There are already a bunch of requests filed for features that are somewhat related. I will log your workflow as well for the times UV Editor gets into active development again.
