I noticed that when I have both, “Grid snap” and “Ortho” active, a vertical construction line appears upon the initial click for building a box, as well as when I have to press again to set the opposite corner of the box. If I disable any of these, there is no longer a vertical line.
The “Box” command does not seem to benefit from the existence of that particular vertical line. In fact, it’s the opposite situation, because it disrupts the creation of the box and I’m unable to set the base of the box if the picking point is on the same place as the vertical line…
that’s the orto for vertical lines (it’s blue) and happens becasue the two points are vertically aligned.
This is a very good features, when you get used to it.
The only problem is that is not sensitive to any measures or text, I’ve already reported this (@Gijs ?) but still there.
I’m aware of the purpose of the vertical line, however, it disrupts the normal creation of the box object. As I mentioned before, the vertical line that appear upon the initial click (the first corner of the box) has no practical usage, but it’s still there. The bigger issue is the fact that Rhino 9 WIP will not let me build a box whose opposite end (the 2nd mouse click) coincides with the vertical line. This is a major bug that I believe should be fixed before Rhino 9 ships on the market.
Not new in V9 WIP. Same behavior in V8 if
Options > Modeling Aids > Ortho Snap to CPlane Z is checked.
This options is not new in V9 WIP; it was iintroduced V8. It looks like this option is turned on by default in V9 WIP. I had it off in V8.
(Updated to option was introduced in V8.)
While the vertical construction line is useful for certain commands that may benefit from it, it’s very counter-productive while creating a box (and maybe other objects that haven’t tested yet). Simply turning it off entirely is not a solution, because some users may need it in their workflow. The issue here is that it not active only for certain commands that really benefit from it.
This is not a new in V9 WIP issue. The “Ortho Snap to CPlane Z” was introduced in V8.
I report a bug in Rhino 9 WIP related to the “Box” tool and the vertical line that activates for no reason and even prevents the finishing of the command. If that particular bug was present even in Rhino 8 for several years, I think that it’s finally time to fix it sooner than later during the current WIP period. We are months from the official release or Rhino 9. It will be pity if this is ignored not resolved now, and that we have to wait for Rhino 10.
I never noticed it because I use Shift to toggle the ortho only when I need it.
Should work the opposite way: Shift to disable the vertical snap.
It should not show any vertical line at all while building the base of the box, because currently this bug does not allow to click with the mouse to set the 2nd box corner.
