UnrollSrf request

Hi Willem,

It wouldn’t fail so much as return a mixed result in some extreme circumstances. It would be likening it to trying to add 10mm fillet on an edge with surfaces of a width of 9mm… It would fail unless the correct value was input but that doesn’t mean you would not have a fillet command.

Consider what labelling the edges is used for. It’s a great aide memoire as it is but it doesn’t serve as a functional output for marking up things which will be cut out. The label bridges the edge so half of the label would be cut off when converted to text.

If you had a pile of cut parts from a sheet of plywood or sheet of steel the printout with dots wouldn’t be of much use as you wouldn’t know which face was the front or the back- it would be of great use if the markings were actually on the part and orientated to the edge.

In the scenario of output closed shapes for CNC cutting the command has failed to reach it’s potential and requires a lot of post processing.

For some reason over the last three months I’ve had three different clients from different countries ask me for similar work where the net outlines need to be cut and welded back together. It starts to become a lot of work to do it neatly, especially where jigs are needed and everything needs annotation on the actual parts to be constructed.

Hi Andy,

I made a proof of conceptAnnotateUnrolledDots.py (2.1 KB) script to annotate the dots from an unroll.
It’s probably even good enough for your needs at this point.

In the script two values can easily be redefined at:

    edge_offset = 5
    text_height = 5

Hi Willem,

That’s pretty much perfect! Thank you for working that out, it’s much appreciated:

That is an invaluable addition to unroll surface for anyone who needs to annotate parts that will be CNCd

Thanks again!

Andy

I’ll leave this here as a reference with regard to tooling fonts that could be used with the script for anyone who uses your handy python script:

Well… It looks like we’re rinventing the wheel @BrianJ

Yep, Paneling Tools can help here too… usually the single stroke font topic comes up next. :wink: oh wait… it already did!

Do you think Paneling Tools and tooling fonts should be part of default Rhino?

Hi Brian,

Tooling font - 100%. I would say that anyone who uses a laser cutter, CNC or even paper printing would benefit from the tooling font.

Panelling tools should be too. Internet connections and HDD SSDs are quick nowadays, I don’t think many people suffer from that kind of limitation as much as they used to.

If it isn’t wholly integral to V6 then it could maybe added to the installation package and have a check box as to whether it’s installed or not?

Thanks for the video.

Andy
