Unable to snap to circle centre with circle over mesh V8 yet works v5

Hi,
V5 and V8
I draw a circle over a mesh and come to snap a point to its centre in V8, and nothing happens,
I turn off all except cntre and still nothing happens.
I then test this in V5 and no problem,
so V8 has an issue with snap to centres over meshes.
I cannot post the mesh here as its HUGE ! 2Gb

back to V5 I fear as I am just starting out on this serious project. with meshes and need to do this hundreds of times…OMG :rage:
unable to snap centre on circle over mesh in V8.3dm (2.2 MB)

dejected

8.16.25042.13001, 2025-02-11 here (so, same as yours it seems)

I can snap to your circle center

Can you replicate this problem if you open just your attached file alone? (2.2MB file)

If the mesh is needed, consider uploading it so devs can replicate the problem.

ZIP it and upload it to tech support.

Hi,
@scottd
V8 snap fail.
on two separate meshes seems repeatable.

mesh is an obj and an jpg and a mtl thing and itsb 200mb zipped,.

I can snap with just that circle, and place it over the mesh and no centre snap

r u thinking its just my mesh and any other mesh is ok ?

have you not a mesh to try it with ?
I havent time to do this havent had eve n meal yet just had supposed friend ring me asking pics knabbed internet resampled and alsort of crap, and now half past midnight and not had eve meal yet, whole day again lost to dark images and V8 and agisoft and now this.
just laid another nmeshin also fails.

V8 has a problem !

and it means I have to go back to v5 and a 2min save time each save.
this wont get fixed, its a bug, so bye v8 . damn.

Hi Steve -

I’m not finding an uploaded file from you…

This seems to work just fine here:

-wim

Hi,
I have now next morning got time to upload the rhino file with another mesh in it and then repeated that with the mesh itself, as it didnt allow me to select two files !
I have snaps ON, and have even just the cntr on incase others were causing distraction, though in V5 they dont, (vertex and knot I keep off as they can cause snapping wildly !)
and selecting point tool it refuses to snap at all.
the circle when drawn sat behind the mesh so I selected it and did a BringToFront.
I then created another new file (using my new Inches decimal template for v5 into v8)
and brought in another mesh, not so big a one, and repeated the test and again it fails,
so zipped the 3dm and also the smaller obj set and its on its way.

As i do snaps to circles hundreds of times no problem in V5 and am about to do so in V8 this is worrying. as without it that essential workflow means unable to use V8.
This project I thought I would at last try V8 on is one that cost me my spine on the day so its also important as well as urgent to be done.
Its also my go to method when finding the middle of anything. Middle of two places, draw a circle between two points tool, then snap to centre ! Essential when drawing a mesh up as a Rhino surfaces engineering item.

I have then drawn a square and again no snap, then an elipse, again no snap.
These are unselected by the way.
I then export that as a V5

Open it in V5 and all work as expected ! and unselected.

If I select one it then snaps, BUT IT FAILS TO DO SO UNSELECTED, except in V5 where snaps work on unselected items ! AS THEY SHOULD DO.

so sending that file now as well !

AND ALSO SENDING THE SCREEN VIDEO shot with OBS, two videos V8 failing and V5 working.

and I do need to snap to centres of shapes !

How does one upload a few files it allows just one.
I zipped the obj set of 3, I zipped the .3dm, I zipped the two recordings,
thats three zips.

or does one then zip the zips. normally uploads allow for selection of files.
not sure zipping a zip is a good idea.

Steve

Use the Between object snap for this instead of making a circle and snapping to the center.

Hi,
Worth remembering though I cant ever see myself using it much.
I see no snap ‘between’, I type Between, and it says only available when picking points.
I draw shapes, I can see them amidst the mesh stuff. points are tricky to see, and also having to type a command each time I do a snap is not practical, I am drawing shapes and snapping in a fast workflow.
circle and snap lot faster.

If I have a chassis beam mesh and want to establish datum middle, draw circle at top then a few more down it, then snap a line between centres then divide then line average of those points,.

Steve

Hi Steve -

It looks like you’ve only posted the two recordings several times.
I’ll need a single Rhino 3dm file only.

When you draw shapes, you are picking points.
-wim

Hi,
thats odd as I did the recordings 15 mins later after sending the .3dm file.
I will resend the 3dm file again, but surely you need the mesh as well ?

can I not use pcloud (already denied wetransfer 7 sends and they say 10 used up) instead to an email address ?
far simpler allows section of more than one file !

I have placed the mesh obj and mtl and jpg in a folder along with the v5 rhino and the v8 rhino then zipped the lot, its called ’ all of them’, and then sent that,
at least now you ahevthem all, but I sent the 3dm 15 mins before the video, something wrong.
it takes ages before clicking send sees anything happen, presume its uploading them to an upload stage before send now initiates the send, wish there was a timer showing progress.

Highly suggest wetransfer or pcloud as other options, as this alone took far longer than should be,
sat here in my jim jams after the night from hell, and eve meal at 1am.

Steve

Thanks.
Rhino 8 is different from Rhino 5 when it comes to snapping to occluded objects.
Your Top viewport is in Wireframe mode, but the mesh that is on top of that overrides that in Rendered mode. As such, this occludes the objects that are below it. Changing the draw order doesn’t change that - perhaps it should.
RH-86388 OSnap: Check DrawOrder for Occlusion

I take it that you want to have the mesh in Rendered mode and snap to objects below it. You can do that by checking the Rhino Options -> Modeling Aids -> Object snaps -> Snap to occluded objects. That will snap to those center points also when the draw order hasn’t been changed and the objects are invisible in that view.

RH-86388 is fixed in Rhino 8 Service Release 18 Release Candidate

Excellent news,
A nominee for the RHINO awards perhaps. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
so just need to get my missing texture in V8 for a V5 import solved and the crawling ants on projected lines to mesh solved. (or make everything I project a degree2 curve, as I do so ) then can use V8.
