The UI does not look at all familiar. There is no command line, nor any viewports. I tried 4View, but, without a command line, the command is not doing anything.
Are there any tutorials describing the UI for this version?

Must be an install issue. I’ve been crashing V8 pretty hard and still haven’t managed to corrupt any settings.
The UI on startup and loading a file should look more like:
(dark mode in Windows)
Run the Reset command to get back to defaults.
Any luck?
Please send in crash reports if possible. We would love to fix these.
I thought it was random, but I think I isolated it to an incorrect ComponentIndexType pass from Rhino (which I later relied on to make a cast). I’ll file a report when I have time to reproduce it (next day or so).

As JB wrote, you can use the Reset command.
Since you don’t have a command line, you could also try restoring the default window layout from the menu line:
-wim
