Trouble with adding background image to rendering in version 8

Hello with hope all is well.

I am having trouble adding a background image to a file to be rendered. I have created a basic environment, declared it in the properties, and configured the Environments panel. The result is a black background on render start.

My trouble may be basic and I apologize, but I cant seem to hack my way through it. Can I get some advice?

Many thanks as always.

Hi @Steven_J_Seim

I couldn’t open your V8 file but I converted it to V7. I noticed there were no bitmaps or environments saved in the file which might be attributed to the convertor or you forgot to check the save textures checkbox on save.

It appears to be working in V7 for me. After you made your adjustments to the environment map did you drag and drop it into the scene in the perspective window? Sometimes I forget and have to do that to get the environment map to show up.

I had to download your image off this post, I couldn’t configure it as a standard environment since the above posted image is not an hdri with the proper mapping. I had to set it to planar to get it to work properly.

When you say background starts out black does it then show up in the rendering? Or does it stay black even after being fully rendered?
I noticed flamingo materials in your file are you using flamingo to render or Cycles?

Here is what I got from a quick render.

That is precisely what I am looking for. I must be taking the incorrect steps.

What I get is a black background. The model appears, but it appears against a black backdrop.

Oh, must I make the background jpeg HDRI? let me go back into it now. May I please ask the proper map settings?

Many thanks. I’m on this now. I do not know if I am using Flamingo. My current renderer is ‘Rhino Render.’ If I need to go there, I think I still have v5-7 on this machine still.

Found it! Damn, I’ve put way too much into this. All apologies as appropriate, and appreciate this forums consistent, speedy response.

Using v8, this tutorial nails it!

Again, many thanks as always.
