Total lock up whilst copying to layer

Dear All

I’m running through the Rhino Tutorials and I’ve got as far as modelling a bar with engraved text. As part of this you copy the entire bar to another layer. This caused Rhino to lock up. I was unable to exit or force quit and the only way out was to do a reboot and if I was too quick with that it waiting for me when I restarted. This happened three or four times. I eventually managed to do it but as far as I can remember the only thing I did differently was to start the process before I selected the object. Is it just me or have I found a bug.

At least one error report was sent to Apple. hopefully they forward these to you.

Below is the screen I got stuck in.

@terryn

Sounds frustrating. Unfortunately, I’m not able to easily replicate this on my end from the information you provided. Can you please give a bit more detailed steps as to how to replicate the bug. Also, if you could possibly attach the file in question just before the crash, that would also help. If not, which tutorial (link please) are you following? (I think I know which one, but I don’t want to presume too much). Finally - can you also please send along your software information (this can be found by going to Rhinoceros > About Rhinoceros > More Info… > Copy to clipboard, then pasting it into a public post here or in a private message to me)?

Thanks for reporting this.

Dan

I was following Exercise 56 at the top of page 158 in the Windows Training Manual. From memory in the eventual successful attempt I started the command Layers - Copy before I selected the bar. However there was a lot of confusion and swearing going on at the time so I can’t be 100% sure. The file shows where I was but may be prior to the successful attempt rather than a failure as I was going back and redoing stuff. It’s difficult to be sure.

not entirely related to your problem but were you trying to force quit from the dock icon? (rhino’s icon in the dock?)

sometimes, that’s ineffective and you should try force quitting from the apple menu (the little apple icon at top left)… (cmmd-option-escape will also bring up the force quit menu)

fwiw, i use CopyToLayer on occasion and it’s never froze up for me as you describe… if it happens again, try your hardest to remember exactly what you were doing prior and make a repeatable sequence to give to the devs… if they can replicate/produce the problem it, they can fix it :wink:

Jeff

I was trying to force quit from the dock. I didn’t know there was another way of doing it. You learn something every day :grin:

Terry

:open_mouth: I know the feeling. Thanks for the extra info. I’ll see if I can replicate the issue.
