License Message

Hi,

Just get this message when starting Rhino. Why?

Thanks,
Dmitriy

Looks like the validation code was unable to contact the necessary web services to extend the offline access period.

Have you pressed the [Login] button so that Rhino can extend the offline usage? The machine with that Rhino install needs to be connected to the internet for the duration of the refresh.

Ok, thanks @nathanletwory

A bit strange - it has been never asking for this before.
So, now, for how long Rhino can be used without internet connection?

Thanks,
Dmitriy

It depends, the heuristics in deciding that still regularly change. You can see from the Options > Licenses page what the validity for current lease is.

@brian can tell you more about the whats and hows.

I want the whys and wherefores…

I assume he’ll be able to shed light onto such matters as well.

'twas a joke… should have put :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I kinda answered in spirit - probably should’ve used the same emoticon (:

Generally, a license lease is for about two weeks of off-line usage.
You can always check in Options > Licenses.

If you have an internet connection, you can force a lease refresh by running the Logout command in Rhino and log back in when you restart Rhino.

We’re being vague because not only does it change now, it will change in the future as we see how people use the Cloud Zoo. The intention is always this:

  1. Rhino will give you ample warning before being unable to run. Today, you start getting warnings days before.
  2. You shouldn’t have to think about whether you’ll be able to run Rhino.
  3. You should always be able to shut down your computer and get on a plane, or do something in a place without an internet connection - without having to think in advance “do I have a license”?
  4. When people try to cheat, we’ll notice, and will change the system.
