Work in progress of a tiger beetle. There are quite many species I found out, and they are the fastest running insects on this planet. The current model is not yet very accurate, still lot of work to do on the head and beak, legs etc. Currently rendered using only procedural materials in V-Ray.
The orange/black leg parts are separated from the body. I had to extract control polygons from these and unwrap, so that I could apply this as custom mapping. Would be nice if this could be done directly from the subd. Then I applied a gradient texture and a slight bump.
For the iridescence color I used mixmaps.
