THE HOW MANY BUTTONS has your MOUSE got POLL

Same setup but I’ve got the Mac keyboard with the numpad

and its so precious you even saved yourself a click not voting in the poll
alright alright but maybe vote anyway if you want

I’ll be happy to vote as well…>:}~* but could’t figure out in which category to list a ‘Magic-Mouse’ …?

Also while searching for a multi-buttons mouse and reading reviews, i wanted to note that the 2 high-end mouse models recommended in this thread, the G700s and the Roccat Tyon, appear to only work on PCs. as we are on a Rhino for Mac category here, would be nice to also read users recommendation for Mac supported multi buttons Mouse models.

finding an appropriate mouse was quite an affair i must say at least personally
and if you dont mind i also let go on some other thoughts leading to choices.

for a long time i used a very cheap simple 3 button mouse from hama the M452
even though it had only a 1000 dpi sensor it felt really good and direct and was sufficient
for the 24 inch screen i then still had. it did what i wanted and felt almost invisible in my hand.

unfortunately its not being produced anymore and the left click gave up… i took it apart
and tried to understand how to fix it which could´ve been done by replacing the switch.
i still have it but i thought i might try something new once… since i had quite a few of those.

while i dont have a huge amount of buttons generally, currently 3 plus a dpi switch
which could be used as a 4th button modifiable with the software coming with this mouse,
i rather feel more obliged finding one which fits into the hand making long works comfortable
with a sensor thats sharp and a driver which does not involve prediction or angle snapping.

after a long search quickly finding out that i cant really omit the gamer market being ready
to invest a little more, reading through multiple forums and running to different shops
i finally found one fitting all requirement… the Kinzu V3. it looks simple, feels good
and cuts lines through the screen like a samurai sword
http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/images/product_images/large/114/steelseries-optical-gaming-mouse-kinzu-v3-white--gamo-505-49969-1.jpg

i also have a roccat lua because i wanted one for traveling purposes its a bit smaller even
and has only 2000 dpi which compared to the Kinzu which has 4000 is still enough
for the laptop screen. to change the presets on the dpi switch you have to switch to windows
but since its stores the settings on the mouse you can do that anywhere else
and use it back on the mac again.

generally having three buttons all my navigational wishes are fulfilled. i use the middle mouse
to maximize the viewport and since i am fairly fast with typing commands and using shorcuts
i have no need for a mouse full of buttons otherwise at least not for now.

here i would clearly say thats a mouse with no buttons

Hi, Akash
Not for advertisement, just my experience
https://mionix.net/product/naos-8200/
Very lightweight, comfortable (i’ve forgotten about pain in wrist even after all-day-long-rhino-marathons) and MacOS ready. Side buttons and buttons under the wheel are easy to reach.
I highly recommend )

thanks for the recommendations
the Naos-8200 seems like a very good high-end mouse,
only issue is maybe about having a wired mouse, it is something I’m not sure about…? working on a MBP
and needing mobility.
that extremely high DPI is it important for Rhino? or is it more of a Gaming need? [i never tried a computer game]
considering that my current Magic-Mouse is only 1200DPI [or something similar]

and thanks RichardZ lots of good info, working mostly with key strokes is where i’m heading too, but for all the view manipulation commands it feels a multi buttons mouse is a good way i’d like to explore.

with best regards
akash

wire is not a problem for me. imo batteries inside the mouse add weight, which is very uncomfortable for long worksesssions.
I work on MBP 15" and it takes about half of an inch of my hand’s movement to drive the cursor from the left edge to the right, although I don’t feel any lack of precision.

That’s my beastie. Forward and back buttons are set to ctrl and shift, respectively, so that I can pan and rotate one handed. I look at it like a poor man’s 3DConnexion.

That´s my setup. Works great.

To add things up:

My buttons are in the keyboard; I´ve customized them – aliases – so much that I´m totally confused when I´m to show sth. on a colleague´s computer and missing the shortcuts in no time.

:worried:

mostly used:

  • G … Group
  • GG … Ungroup
  • L … Lock
  • LL … UnlockSelected
  • H … Hide
  • HH … UnHideSelected
  • C … Copy
  • M … Move
  • SC … Scale1D
  • SCC … Scale2D
  • SCCC … Scale3D
  • RT … Rotate
  • RTT … Rotate3D
  • T … PlaceTarget … (CameraTarget)
  • CX … -CPlane W L Enter
  • CY … -CPlane W F Enter
  • CZ … -CPlane W T Enter
  • ZZ … _ZoomSelected _Zoom F 0.8

This helps a lot to use a trackpad intuitively ("rotating & panning the model in your fingers), but at the same time work fast …

very nice, including custom keys on top of the f buttons
which functions do they carry? :stuck_out_tongue:

They carry heavy workload; see http://atelier522.com

every couple of months i decide to try a trackpad on the desktop but then i forget to go get one… there’s a new apple store right down the street now… maybe that will give me an excuse to go check the place out…
(apparently, the existing space was too dilapidated for apple’s tastes so they tore it down and built it new using much of the original design… might be neat)

Let us know how you go, I’ve always been curious how it could be incorporated into a production workflow…

Somehow my Wacom Intuos pen doesn’t work too well with Rhino for me so I mostly use a wired 5 button mouse from Logitech.

I switch a lot between different 3D apps which all have completely different ideas about navigation and it helps my muscle memory to also switch input devices. So for instance Rhino with the mouse and Houdini with the pen helps a bit with me getting confused what to press for navigation.

Overall, viewport navigation must be the most challenging area for developers - somehow it seems to be a specific requirement to come up with something incompatible with everything else, otherwise you’re not allowed to play.

Cheers,

Tom

I’m very keen on this issue and I’ve some design ideas for an ideal mouse.

The best I’ve found for Mac is the Logitech Performance Mouse MX - It has 7 buttons (although I don’t use the scroll wheel button as it’s awkward) I prefer the wireless tools over the cables.

Unfortunately, Logitech customer support is remarkably poor. I’d jump ship at the first opportunity but there’s nothing for the Mac that’s nearly as useful.

I’ve programmed the buttons to copy / move / zoom extents / popup menu

Unfortunately, while it indicates it’s possible, I cannot assign any button as a modifier (the command key would open a great many one finger commands)
