Text Rotation to Read from left

I need to rotate text in layout space so that it runs vertically with its base on the left. When I do that, it automatically rotates so that its base is on the right side. If I then mirror it, the mirrored text reverts to the original orientation. If I explode it, it loses its fill and scale. Is there a workaround?

Hello - It looks like that is controlled by this setting in the annotation style:

Thanks. Not sure I would have figured that out from the label of the check box!
